Sigh. I wanted to like--to love--this book. I wanted it to blow my mind. But while parts of it were excellent, it took me forever to even start it, and even longer to plod through it. Sometimes I just need to accept that philosophy-heavy books are just not my cup of tea. This is one of my friend's favorite books, and I had grabbed it off a shelf in my old office in New York--it still has the business card of one of our European agents, which I used as a bookmark. So the book has a close emotional tie for me... but it just went over my head at times. Maybe I should have started with one of Hesse's shorter books. Or maybe I just need to try again some day. I recognize that there are powerful, beautiful parts of the book; I just wish I could appreciate it that way as a whole.

Maybe it's just not my type of book, but I got tired of everyone complaining about their lives. It's like the book had a one track mind. And I really could have done without the peeing in the ocean scene. Once I got to that point, it was a real struggle to read any further. I ended up stopping about 3/4 of the way through the book.

OK, I have to start by saying there was only one or two things I didn't agree with in this book. This is the conservative's bible. I already felt everything in this book, and now I know why and am armed with the facts behind my beliefs. I love how everything is footnoted so if you want to read the original copy of Levin's information you can get right to it. So much history I never learned because we aren't taught it. I should have gone after it myself. We are following in histories footsteps and making the same mistakes FDR made with the new deal. I hope everyone reads this so we can do something before it is too late.

This was my second time reading this book and it was just as good as the first time around. I think it was mostly the writing that made me enjoy this novel. It was poetic and nicely written, easy to read. I don't know much about the culture, however provided this book is accurate, a beautiful and detailed description allowed me to learn a lot and appreciate the culture. Very well written and entertaining.

Eh, not her best work. The first story made no sense. The second story made sense but she finished it off way too quickly. I didnt even try and tackle the third story. I think I may be done with Lord John books

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The author is one year older than I am, and she has perfectly described the world of our youth. This book is billed as a documentary novel and makes great use of many photos and quotes from the period. The story takes place in October 1962, the time of the Cuban missile crisis. Although I don't ever recall seeing the film "Duck and Cover", and do not remember having nuclear attack drills, everything else about the time is so right on the nose accurate, it made me sort of relive that time in my life. What fun! I think modern kids can relate to the timeless story of an eleven year old who has a falling-out with her best friend and who, for the first time, moons over a boy. All of the universal angst of an eleven-year-old girl is just as relevant now. I really think the best way for kids to learn history is by reading novels such as this one.
