I read this book, even adjusted my A to Z challenge list for it, out of desperation as my usually sweet 4 1/2 year old had recently expanded his arsenal of weapons of misbehavior. It has given me a lot of good advice and things to consider. I've learned that my behavior will in large part determine my children's behavior.

This unique story is told by a mother and by her autistic son himself at age 25. The device of presenting the same episodes from both perspectives provides a rare opportunity to see the reasons behind his aberrant behavior. That part of the narrative is valuable, and the fury and frustration he describes should serve as a rebuttal to those who pretend that being autistic is simply an alternate way of being and that we are misguided when we try to change such a person. On the other hand, I'm troubled by the claim that he essentially recovered by an act of his own will. Suggesting that such a thing can happen strikes me as being dangerous in that it could lead other families to passively hope for the best, as opposed to taking an active role in finding help. It implies that others with autism might also spontaneously recover, and I just don't hear of that happening. Autism is a neurological condition--or rather a collection of symptoms reflecting a variety of poorly understood syndromes of various origins. This is not meant to detract from the potential of individual will, but if Sean Barron truly recovered by simply deciding to do so, I can only conclude that his underlying condition was unlike that of others with the same label.

Steve and Meyer Meyer are called in on a kidnapping. Good story. I also watched the movie High and Low a Japanese film directed by Akira Kurosawa, that used this book as its source material which was a very good flick.

This book is on the list of the Modern Library of the World's Best Books. I must disagree with this assessment. Although the plot is initially quite intriguing, none of the characters--not the protagonist Nicholas Urfe, not his two love interests (Alison and Lily), and not the antagonist (Maurice Conchis)--is even likable or really even psychologically interesting, and the plot becomes simply unbelievable as the novel advances. Fowles never really gives any reason for the trials and tribulations through which Nicholas suffers, and the "lesson" he learns seems all too obvious, something most people learn rather easily and without all the drama that Nicholas is forced to undergo by Conchis and his cohorts; moreover, the expense and extremes to which Conchis resorts in order to "educate" Nicholas seem utterly ridiculous. Additionally, the erotic scenes are atrocious: they appear to have been written by a second-rate romance novelist. [*****SPOILER ALERT*****:] Finally, the ending, intentionally left open and vague by Fowles is quite frustrating; his refusal to bring the novel to a definitive conclusion leaves the reader feeling quite unfulfilled, especially after trudging through over 700 pages (in the hardback version).

A beautifully written, complex book, taking place in the United States and Europe during World War II. The story follows many inter-related characters and story lines about different people as they try to survive during the war.

The language is a bit flowery and can go on and on, but overall, it's an in-depth look at the court of Mughal India, and the woman, Mehrunissa, who came to rule it.

Slight yet entertaining. Maigret has, as has frequently been noted, a fine eye for detail. I particularly liked the ugly virgin with a leonine upturned nose.

Did not finish. Lost interest after 1/3 - never connected with the main characters.

okay, i've become a katherine hall page master. i can read these and know the killer before faith knows it herself. of course, she never seems to "know" - she seems to just get trapped by the person at the very end and her life gets threatened. i'm not sure how i feel about that. i think every once and awhile it's important for your detective to actually SOLVE the crime, not just stumble into the nefarious perpetrator's dastardly plans at the end. because then faith goes, "oh me! oh my! i didn't know it was you! you seemed so charming not fifty pages earlier! why are you smiling at me like that?" or something. actually this book would have received two stars EXCEPT that page references my all-time favorite book (Cold Comfort Farm) AND quotes my all-favorite line ("I saw something nasty in the woodshed"). which makes her, by default, awesome. but, really. think about having faith actually solve the murder next time.
