Our favorite gonzo journalist is at it again, only this time the madness exists outside his head! Reeling from the fame and notoriety caused by his Vegas book, the Duke reinvents himself and becomes Uncle Lono. He strikes eastward on the corpse of the American Dream in search of the American Nightmare. He encounters bizarre situations which he takes in stride because there is always cause for great and terrible violence, and because he's got Wild Turkey and Heineken in hand. The drugs help too, of course. Especially the fungi from Yuggoth. The American Nightmare Uncle Lono discovers is something so terrible and pervasive, he decides he's the only one mad enough to fight it! This book is very well written. I have not read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but I imagine the style is very similar. This is fan fiction at its best, written with loving regard and due respect for the original gonzo journalist. The Lovecraftian aspect blends beautifully with the inherent insanity of the Duke's rambling. Mamatas and Keene take great pleasure in bringing us Thompson's last adventure, that one last hoorah before age and pain takes its toll across the long years towards that final, fearless moment. Deliciously depraved, hilarious in its many contradictions, and relentlessly inventive, this is not a book I'll easily forget. *Courtesy of Netgalley*

(SciFi, 2010) Military experiments lead to vampire and apocolypse for America. Hope falls on a six-year-old who might be able to stop the vampires - if she gets to grow up enough. This is a big book, and covers a lot of ground and years. I did not realize when I came to the end that it is a first of several series, and felt very unsatisfied with the conclusion, but it's better since I found out there is more coming. The story development is slow, with each section being given a lot of attention and detail, and years evolve between the sections. The second book doesn't come out until next year - that's a looooong time to remember all the plot points of this very large book.

What did I learn from this book? Not to become a historian and never to try to investigate Dracula. Oh, and bravery and love prevails, of course, blabla. The story tells of the search for Draculas tomb to cease his unholy excistence. The tomb is not where history would place it and the search becomes dangerous as supernatural occurances plague those involved. History and facts are so well intertwined with fiction that you find yourself believing in things you know are not real. I read The Historian in just over a week - I couldn't put it away! I was enchanted by the story, it's well written and very suspenseful. Luckily it wasn't too scary to read at home alone, but almost. I like how the book leaves a lot for the reader to decide. The book starts with a letter from the author, dated in 2008 - try to figure that one out! A silly book, I know, but a fabulous read!

For anyone who is thinking about reading this book, I highly recommend it. However, I also recommend reading it as a series of fascinating, well-told stories. It is really nothing more and nothing less. One of the criticisms I heard about this book before I read it is that Gladwell lays out his theory in the first chapter, and the rest of the book is just example after example supporting his theory. I agree, however it would be a serious mistake to only read the first chapter. The pleasure of reading this book is in those stories- he talks about interesting psychological experiments and unbelievable examples of where snap judgement trumped long and careful research and analysis, and where snap judgement failed because of unconscious prejudices. The problem with this book is that his argument is not cohesive. I kept reading on and on expecting his argument to become clear, but that never happens. Instead, one story after another contradicts his original theory, and he keeps changing his mind about what that theory is. For example, a point he makes is that someone's intuition can lead to the right conclusion, while deliberate analysis by experts considering all information available can be completely off. However, in all his stories where someone made a good snap judgement, that person was an expert and was able to use his judgement under a high-stress situation precisely because of his long career of careful study or of many experiences in that situation. Another problem is that he seems to think that one can know ahead of time when to use their snap judgement or when to carefully research something and consider all information available. The problem with that part of his argument is that, in all the examples where the person's snap judgement failed, that person was not aware of his subconscious prejudices because they were, obviously, subconscious. In the afterward he wrote after the book was published, he tried to reconcile these contraditions, but it was still not convincing. Regardless, his examples really are fascinating, and he really is a great story-teller. I think if you read this book without the expections that I had, and without trying to mentally place each example in a larger framework of what you think his argument is, you would very much enjoy it.

Book of short stories. Science fiction/speculative fiction seems to be the genre. Eskridge is a glorious writer, subtle, and writing about things that I didn't even know about myself until I found them in her words. I was nodding and saying, "Yes, that's me, too." In my opinion, the best writers open up new understandings or awarenesses of the self and world. She is one of those writers.

I know I'm supposed to love this book, but as of yet, I have no emotional attachment whatsoever to the characters or any other element. I'm shelving it in favor of other books right now, but I'll give it another shot eventually. At the very least, the dialogue is funny in parts.

I thought this was a great book! It's a true story of a daughter (the author)'s perspective on her life with a hoarding mother. The psychology behind the hoarding is very well researched and really, truly insightful. It's sad, sweet, funny, and made me want to wash my sheets more and get rid of lots of household junk!
