while it cannot be denied that Salinger writes well, and that this book is tightly choreographed (as are all his works), i was bored. it was slow and i was bored.

so far, this is really good-i'm not very good at sticking with non-fiction, but i like the ideas that this author discusses, so i'm sticking with it. i'm also mixing in my usual fiction to keep me balanced. the guy's tongue-in-cheek title gets pretty deep into the relationships between children and their nature experience and a myriad of childhood issues. obesity, academic performance, pressure to perform, depression, values. it's a lot to take in, but i really like it so far.

This book came highly recommended but I thought it was gross. I got through it but didn't feel enlightened or entertained along the way.

Terry Brooks still keeps churning them out. In his last series he united his "knights of the word" and the "Shannara" worlds together, and destroyed the modern world. Where can you go after that? A small group that separated itself from the burning world is forced to join back up with it after a couple hundred years. What's the new world like? How will they survive? How has the power and how can you be protected? Terry Brooks starts this new trilogy (of course) by setting up the classic tale of the struggle between youth and elders to adapt to new situations, make the right choices, suffer the journey, and come up triumphant, but with a few less people and some scratches. The story sets things up a bit differently in terms of what the characters will utltimately need to face. I'll leave it at that as I'm not one to post spoilers for contemporary books. I felt that last trilogy had a little bit of social commentary on the state of the world, specifically the USA, during the 2000-2010 period. It was hard not to think that with a dog named Chaney. This book sets up an unseemingly impossible situations for the protagonists to overcome. It just doesn't seem possible. Just like the economic, political, social, and educational issues the US is facing in 2011 - there will be changes, good and bad, we'll go through the meat grinder, and the end outcome will be something different, but the same - and we'll have to live with it. Perhaps there will be some magic in both cases that saves the day - if that be the case I can't imagine its genesis coming from conservatives.

I forgot how enjoyable it is to read a good spy novel. And I found a new author that I enjoy. If you like Ludlum you should like this too.
