I love me some books with a magical twist to them. And Little Black Dress by Susan McBride delivers just that in her latest, and spectacular, novel. Even though I appreciate a good paranormal twist in books, sometimes they can be hard to achieve. But McBride manages to pull it off, all while delivering an emotional story that had me cheering and crying at the end. The main character is Antonia Ashton, a workaholic who is forced to move home to Blue Hills after her mother, Evie, suffers a stroke. While going through her childhood home, Antonia stumbles upon secret after secret. Much of the hidden past has to do with her aunt Anna, who mysteriously vanished fifty years earlier the night before her wedding. Through the help of one little black dress, the three women learn lessons about family, love, and even magic. I just adored this book. I didn’t want to put it down, I wanted it to keep going after I finished; just an all around great read. All three characters are complex and engaging, and I was invested immediately in their stories. The book changes from past to present, and kept giving readers a little taste of what happened between Evie and Anna and why Anna ran away and how that linked to Antonia in the present. I think chick lit readers would have a great time reading this book, and it sure makes you want your own magical LBD! This makes it on my Favorites List for 2011. Get your copy!

Some small (in my eyes) spoilers for those annoyed by such things. I enjoyed the first three of Gulliver's travels, and would give that part of the book a good rating purely on merit of being diverting, though there were several vulgar passages that should (and could) have been omitted. Beyond being simply fun to read, I felt that it was a prime example of good language of surpassing clarity. When I read Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities it took me a few pages to become used to his complicated prose. Once accustomed to his manner of speaking I found that I loved it and his prose is still my favorite of anything I have read, but the prose that Swift employed in writing Gulliver's Travels had a straightforward simplicity that was compelling and refreshing; I liked it. Something I noted was the narrating Gulliver's seeming disinterest in his own plights, triumphs and defeats throughout the book. What I found interesting was that despite the lack of emotion present in the narrative, I felt that I connected with Gulliver as a character quite well, such that I was even irritated and annoyed by his ruined state at the end of the novel. I find it worth mention because I have found in the past that seeing the emotions of a character was what helped me to relate to them the most, but in this case Swift managed it without that, I was intrigued by that. A word about the last of Gulliver's four journeys, which I found to be almost a chore to read, and which further drew my ire because of the changes it made in Gulliver himself. In the final journey I felt that Swift was simply slipping into long discourses on the foibles of humanity. Now, because of the nature of the book as a satire, that is precisely what Swift has been doing for most of the book, but it did not work here in the end, I think largely because he has Gulliver embark upon long, exaggerated (true, but still exaggerated) monologue about the state of things in Europe, whereas in the past he had focused mainly on the places to which Gulliver had traveled, add to that the fact that these monologues were specifically designed and calculated to bring all the worst of humanity to the front, and represent it as all that humanity is, which representation I found brought more displeasure with the author, than it brought reflection upon the faults of humanity. Perhaps my reaction is simply a consequence of my living in this time, where exist all of the same faults under somewhat different forms, rather than living in the time and place from which Swift was drawing his experiences, and perhaps not. I leave it to the individual reader to decide for themselves.

More like a 2.5 star for me. I never really got into the story at all. The first part of the book strayed too much into mf territory.(view spoiler) The women were like sex starved and throwing themselves at the men. There were too many scenes where the women tried to button and unbutton for seduction, or discussion on when they were getting married and about dowry. Aren gets attacked by one particularly determined woman who wants to marry him. We're not spared the unnecessary details of their encounter. (view spoiler) But when Aren and Deacon get together all of a sudden no one is pressuring Aren to get married anymore. This showed a lack of cohesion in this story line. When Aren and Deacon get together there's a whole lot of sex scenes and not a lot of plot points. There was a menage scene added that seemed pointless especially as it's with a character that was basically forgotten after the first third of the book. All of a sudden he returns and one of the characters must add him to their sex life. I didn't like the fact that he springs this third person on his lover. I thought this made the character appear thoughtless and not so loving. But it's a scene you can skim/skip and really miss nothing. I mention the fantasy portion of the story last as that's the position the author appears to have put it. I expect a lot more story from a fantasy book and this didn't satisfy me at all. The stars given is really for Aren and Deacon as characters. I just want a better story for these two,

Ejderha Avcıları Okulu (1. Kitap) Okulda İlk Gün Sürprizi - Kate Mcmullan TrendKitaplar Kütüphanesi

3.5 Stars If this book was a movie, I would watch the commercials and secretly think about how much I wanted to see it, but I would never admit it to anyone. I would wait for it to come out on a Premium Channel and watch it alone when no one was home. If anyone came in while said movie was on, I would dive across the bed/couch or whatever and change the channel before they knew what I was doing. I would probably wish I had the DVD to watch when I was in a bad mood, but be too afraid anyone would see it on my shelves. That said, this was an entertaining if not intentionally cheesy book ala Mean Girls meets some other trendy teen flick I have pretended not to have seen a million times. Long story short, Margarita or Madge as she is known by her obligatory gay best friend Lucas lives in Winter Park Florida which is a suburb of Orlando. She is a confident and attractive overweight Latina girl who had been a child actress for Disney with her childhood best friend Brigit, until blonde Brigit got a role in a TV show Madge thought she had in the bag. While Madge insists she was not upset Brigit got the role, we learn through her actions in the story that she is not being truthful to herself on that matter. Aside from this, Brigit never returned any of Margarita's phone calls after this incident leading Madge to hate her former best friend for ditching her. When Brigit leaves homeschooling to attend Winter Park High School, her fame skyrockets her to Queen Bee status. While Madge is generally liked by the student body of her high school, Brigit and she share a mutual dislike. This carries over to a drunken argument at a party where the two insult each other and vow to defeat one another in the race for Prom Queen. While Brigit has funds and publicity on her side, Madge needs to figure out what she has to win. In the midst of this, Lucas, her best friend has broken up with his first real boyfriend whom Madge adored. He subsequently hooks up with the schools super senior gay man-whore who is implied to be dirty and gross. While I enjoyed this book as a non serious fun read, I found Margarita annoying at times. She had a need to control everything around her including the choices her friends made. She also had a bad habit of lying to herself about important matters, though this was key to character development later on in the story. In spite of this the book was light, silly and as colorful as the cover suggests. I would have liked to see a little more "all out war" on Madge's side, because Brigit was a real bitch in the battle, but it all worked out well enough in the end. Almost too well in fact. This book is what teen comedies are made of. Topical humor which may seem dated in 5-10 years, a high school popularity contest and wealthy attractive people. The end was delivered wrapped up in a colorful box with a neat little bow which was almost too predictable, but comfortably so. Please note, also I made a point of turning the cover over whenever my boyfriend was in the area to hide the title of what I was reading.
