I've been having a really hard time working out all the ways I was disappointed in this novel. I hate it when I read something by an author I've enjoyed, and even recommended to other people, and have my opinion of them change dramatically after a new reading, and not for the better. Maybe Bester just got stuck in the 1950s - that's the most harmless interpretation. The exceedingly racist stereotypes, the blatant sexism – I can read over that in a book written in 1955 (though I really don't remember there being any to speak of in The Stars, My Destination), but this was written in 1981. There's no excuse for the linguistic and political attitudes of this novel in 1981. I wanted to come up with at least one thing that I like about this story. Nothing. The main character is a pale shadow of Gully Foyle, a complete egotist with no real motivation for any of his outlandish (yet boring) escapades. The plot line is some vague ethnic Mafia power struggle that I lost track of about half-way through. The science fiction ideas are few and far between, and nothing new or at all interesting. The best part of the book is probably the Afterword by Julius Schwartz and Elliot Maggin about Bester's early career in the magazines. Skip it. Read The Stars, My Destination instead and just forget this novel exists.

Very good book. Liked the way it was written and how they all interplayed with each other.

One of my favorite Graham Greene's. He devided his own works into entertainments and more serious novels. This one has a dark humor-slapstick hybrid thing going on that really works (most of the prostitute scenes come to mind) and is also an examination of a man given authority but no direction in a world with basically the same condition.

Every Christmas eve when I was young, my Dad would read me this book. At the time I thought it rather boring and inferior to the lush pictures in The Polar Express, but in retrospect this book has had a profound impact on my artistic imagination.

I had no idea what to expect from this book. It was recommended by my SIL and I had never heard of Neil Gaiman. I was surprised. I laughed out loud several times. It was sort of a modern twist on Anansi. Every once in awhile he would throw in a word that would make it more of an 'adult' book. Overall i really enjoyed it.

This telling of Sleeping Beauty and the illustrations made a huge impression on me. Haunting, lonely, full of death, decay, love and sweetness. An incredible treasure to have in the house.

The American ideal of pulling yourself up by your bootstraps is questioned by Ehrenrich's book. Her book shows how difficult it can be to move out of the working class poor to the middle class.

My favorite of the three Steven Millhauser books I've read thus far — and now I've got only eight more to go! Many of Millhauser's stories don't even have characters in the traditional sense. These fictions are more like essays, histories or journalistic reports documenting a parallel universe's architecture, art, fashion and human behavior. The section of four stories on "Impossible Architecture" reminded me of Italo Calvino's "Invisible Cities." Like Borges and Kafka, Millhauser reimagines our world in absurd, fantastical ways that bring the real world into sharper focus.

I ended up reading Across the Universe in two phases. I initially got the book from the library, as I was one of the first holds. Unfortunately, that meant my time with it was limited and I did not have time to finish it, since my library pile had gotten rather out of control. So I got about halfway through and had to return it and wait until I could re-procure the book to finish it. The point of all of this is that my opinion of the book had changed a bit when I came back to it. The first half of the book did not really succeed in engaging me. I had heard so much hype and was so looking forward to it, and it did not live up to that. (Isn't that always the way with me?) Upon return, as I skimmed through the book to make sure I remembered everything and tried to locate my stopping point (because genius that I am I forgot to make note of that location), I found myself thinking how cool it was. Reading through the rest of the story was then a breeze. The story still was not quite perfect (like many other teen dystopias, there's a section pretty much straight from The Giver), but I am super hopeful about the second book in the series. I really liked how shades of gray it was (not in the Jasper Fforde sense). Elder is the perfect example. He's a good a guy and I related more to him than to Amy (how much can I really relate to someone who runs for fun?), but he definitely has a dark side (and not in the oh no, I'm a vampire who might hurt you sense). Dystopia fans should definitely not miss this one, as it is one of the awesome ones that is really a dystopia on several different levels (although more than the dictator would be spoilers). As a final enticement, here's a quote that encapsulates the book: "This ship is built on secrets; it runs on secrets."
