Remember that book that Mercy got back in Iron Kissed that helped her learn about fae items? It was supposed to be on loan, but Mercy hasn't given it back yet. And now, the man who lent it to her is missing. And the fae are after her again. The set-up makes it sound like this is another book focused on the fae, but where it really counts, this book is about the wolves. Mercy has agreed to be Adam's mate --and she is now a member of his pack. But there are many pack members who are not on board with that. She becomes a target for people she thought were her friends. Not only does it threaten her relationship with Adam, it endangers both their lives. At the same time, Samuel is at the end of his rope. He is tiring of life and sees no reason to go on. We've seen this coming for a while, but that doesn't make it any easier when the time comes. I love the way his wolf continues to fight for life even when the man has given up. I love that Mercy holds on to him with both hands and even enlists Adam to her cause. What I don't love, was how this part of the story was resolved. I understand why the author chose the path she did, but it felt too easy. And nothing about this series has ever been easy. Samuel has struggled and struggled and sudden the solution just appears? It bugged me. I did enjoy the arc of the fae storyline --and it was great seeing Mercy and Adam finally getting to explore their love for each other. I think my favorite part of the book was when Mercy was able to see the bonds in her life for what they are. I can't wait to see how the author keeps it interesting in future installments. Sometimes happy = boring. But so far, our adventures with Mercy have been anything but that. 4 1/2 stars.

I liked this book ok, but enjoyed his other, "Do No Harm" better. This one seemed to be written for other pharmacists...in some parts he didn't find it necessary to use language that "a normal joe" like me, could understand. Even with a nursing degree, I was having to search context to understand the terminology. The story itself was so-so, I didn't find the characters as believable but there were parts that were exciting or touching. This book won't get a high recommendation, but it was an interesting take on what may have happened to some of the posterity of Book of Mormon peoples.

SO I made the mistake of watching a 'B movie' version of this before reading the original. About the only thing the movie got right was the big reveal at the end. But I kind of wish the original had been a bit tighter and focused.

Enjoyable, felt it kind of petered out at the end. Not really sure where it could have gone, but it was pretty anticlimactic.

An interesting story that very well could have been fictional-what a story! Told from her cold and detached perspective, sometimes I found myself wandering mentally. The closest it got to being personal was when she started doing genealogical research, and unfortunately, I found that boring. It's interesting that this book was written after both of the biological parents' death, made me wonder if some things were embellished (though I hope not, for A.M. Homes sake of sanity). For a memoir I feel like I know absolutely nothing about the author upon completion. BUT, from a writer's standpoint, I enjoyed the book.

In Dubious Battle is part of the Steinbeck triad that includes Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath. I had read the latter two but had not even heard of the former. It certainly fits nicely with Steinbeck's more famous novels about working class people struggling to earn enough money to eat, much less what most would call a decent lifestyle. This novel depicts the inner machinations of "the animal," that organized body that rises up against the establishment in the form of a strike. Jim Nolan and his radical friend, Mac, are the generals of the strike against apple growers in California. It is raw and shows the very militaristic nature of a strike. Realistic and quite violent in many places, Steinbeck's novel takes us to a place that few people can still associate with, which is why it is as important as ever that In Dubious Battle be read. The character, Mac, looms large in the novel. He utterly facinates. He knows exactly what makes men do spectacular things in the face of tremendous adversity and what will make them quail when they most need courage. Mac alone is worth the time and money spent on this novel. If you have read Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath, then you must read In Dubious Battle. It is an essential part of a trilogy of novels about the common man during the Great Depression. Reading it makes the other two parts resound even more. I give it three stars only because Steinbeck's other novels are so much more accomplished.

Fascinating read. Great exploration of the human mind and why we act the way that we do. Not only is the content interesting, Slater's writing is superb and really makes the studies jump off the page and become real. A must read.
