This book (and the other three in the original story arc) were totally formative literary experiences for me as a kid. Something about Ender just totally GOT ME. I was in LOVE with the character. I read all the books many many times. I even did a speech from Speaker for the Dead for a monologue in drama in high school. Yikes. But I hadn't read any of them in years--probably, around 10 years or so since I last re-read--and I was curious to know what I'd think of them now. Reading this book now, I was reminded of all the things I found so compelling when I read it the first time... mostly, that all the interpersonal insights and descriptions of what goes on inside the characters' heads are just so damn POIGNANT. But now, everything seemed just a LITTLE trite, and the writing style was just a LITTLE too simple and obvious. Card actually talks about this in the author's introduction to this edition--kinda gets defensive actually in reaction to more "literary" criticism of his work. But I guess this is occasionally the problem with scifi--great ideas, mediocre wordsmithing. But ultimately, in this book, the ideas are enough. It's hard to say, but I am pretty sure I would not like this book as much as I did when I was a kid if I read it for the first time now. I know I've recommended it to a lot of book buffs over the years, and still would do so, but you have to be able to approach the book in a certain way to appreciate it, I think.

I found the scientific explanations scattered throughout the book interesting but overall this book was not what I expected. If I were looking for more info on meditation and how to practice it, then i would have been happier. As it is, I feel I got some helpful info on what mediation is and how to begin meditating. The author does repeat himself too much on the issue.

I enjoyed this book mainly because it was set in DC.

The Cure reminded in me some ways of both Lois Lowry's The Giver and Number the Stars. They story is of a young man in a future where difference is forbidden, who is "deviant" in his love of music. The cure is to give him the memory of a young Jewish man in 1348 when the plague ravaged Europe and was blamed on Jews. The Jewish man loves music and the elders believe that by associating music with pain, they will cure him of his deviance. The story was very engaging and well worth the hour or so of my life that I spent completely immersed in the story.

I reread this book a couple years after the first time. I enjoyed it more because I knew not to expect much plot or charcter wise and was simply able to enjoy the comical ride.

Disappointing, this third and final of a loose trilogy did not satisfy. Great modern and up-to-the-minute detail on technology, communications and gadgets but very poor character development. The main characters all struck me as two-dimensional and slightly pretentious cartoons. Kind of like that insecure projection of too-cool that one gets from a coffee barista.

I liked that this book brought books 1 and 2 together. I enjoyed reading the book up until the last chapter. I was encouraged that it might share a deeper message about humanity and the happiness you find in caring for others but it just fell flat in the end.

Yes, it's beautifully written, but I don't like any of the people. Even Gatsby, the best of a rotten bunch, is only a successful crook who falls for a bad woman. I've read this twice and I still don't want to read any more Fitzgerald.
