If I was a history teacher, this would be my textbook. It's the kind of book that you can't read by yourself because all you want to do is read the funny parts out loud to people. It is total comedy genius, plus it's a brilliant history book. The best part of the whole book is the chapter on Hannibal, and about his journey over the Alps via elephant caravan, which is pretty much the most ridiculous way you could think of to cross the Alps, and how every time Hannibal wrote home to Carthage to send more elephants, the people of Carthage would respond, did he think they were made of elephants and what had he done with the elephants they sent before. That line made me CRY laughing the first time I read it.

Richard Scarry is a classic, and it's nice to see nursery rhymes that haven't been dumbed down for kids. These are the originals, and they're as wonderful and the illustrations. Definitely better for preschool aged kids. We only checked it out because my toddler found it at the library and refused to put it down.

Fear the Worst is written in the first person and it is a crime thriller in the top league. Tim's situation is very easy to relate to and this story has a good pace with a very good attention to detail. It is an engaging story and you develop a great empathy for Tim Blake in his quest to find his missing daughter. Tim has very little information to go on, where is Sydney and why has she lied to him? Why did she not leave a note or phone home? There are plenty of twists and doubts for the reader to enjoy. You are kept in suspense as to how this story will unfold. This book is an entertaining read but sadly for some families this scenario is a problem they have to bear without a resolution. This novel is a tale of hopeless loss, a missed opportunity and never being able to wind back the clock to be a "good dad". All the options to love and care were taken away from Tim, all his chances are gone forever and he may never get his daughter back and hold her in his arms. You really feel for Tim Blake and as this book ends on page 471 Linwood writes in Italics... If only I'd known. If only I'd known. Fear the Worst is a good book and I think it is better than Too Close to Home .

I vividly recall having this book read to me as a child, and as such it will always hold a special place in my heart. After a second reading a couple years ago (at the age of 22 rather than 8) the Christian themes annoyed me a bit but I was able to get past all that and love the story for the role it played in my childhood.

A little long, but for fans of the gothic tale, a good read.

very well written but I have extemely mixed feelings about the messages contained therein. Especially the glorification of self-abuse (jesus, not masturbation. you know, physically hurting yourself) and self-loathing. A society of thought-less drones seeking only their own pleasure and constantly departing the world for drug holidays is obviously a horrible vision of the future, but the opposition he sets up is hardly better. Some things I agree with: the joy of hard work, the importance of thought and not escaping the world constantly. But I don't believe in self-hatred as a lifestyle, and I can't get down with anything that seems to advocate it.

Guilty pleasure. I fell into this one completely, which surprised me considering I'm picky when it comes to reading stuff based off of Greek mythology. Throw in the fact that the author was far too much influenced by Twilight -- oh yes, that's very obvious -- and you'd think I wouldn't have made it past the first couple of chapters. But I loved it. It was too much fun. There was laugh out loud humor throughout (in between all the fighting), my favorite sidekick/best friend ever (oh Claire, come be my friend please), and of course all the mythological references. With everyone responding to Riordan's well-deserved success by writing YA novels about Persephone (yes, folks, there are other myths - read your Hamilton) this is at least different and riveting. And only the first book!

Had some interesting stories, but overall was extremely dry and hard to get through.

Probably one of the best books I've ever read. I remeber being amazed by the magic of a one and a half page sentence. Sentences, chapters, characters, the plot - everything is perfectly constructed.
