** spoiler alert ** In hindsight, I'm not sure why I bothered reading this all the way to the end as there were no plot revelations that surprised me in any way. I was several steps ahead of the dim-witted protagonist the entire way through. What I can't understand is if Kate Morton meant her book to be so meta? Example 1: Sickly child Rose gets better through the love of a hidden garden being tended back to life by her cousin. Later on, Frances Hodgson Burnett visits Rose's house and hears the story. "The healing power of a secret garden? Lol, I'm writing a book about that!" she says. Example 2: Dim-witted Cassandra meets two blokes who are doing up her house and garden. Bloke #1 makes her swoon and flutter with his rugged good looks. Bloke #2 is quieter, but Cassandra feels the stirrings of attraction True Love™. Later that evening, her friend (who used to write Jilly Cooper-esque novels) says, "If this were a novel I was writing, Bloke #1 would be the sexy man candy but Bloke #2 would get the girl. ;)" (Needless to say, Cassandra ends up with Bloke #2.) There's also a line where Cassandra says, "Life would be so much easier if people all belonged to stock character types." That was the point at which my eyes rolled right out of my head, because Kate Morton couldn't create a unique and realistic character if her life depended on it. Two of her female characters, Julia and Ruby, were more like pantomime dames than real women. Every single one of their actions and utterances was so overblown that I half expected one of them to whip off a wig and reveal that she was, in fact, a man in drag.
