Only vaguely SF, even though its set in an advanced steam punk world. Yet the book still manages to acheive a lyrical meditation on our personal relationship to technology.

read at least 3 times, feeling that maybe I should read it again soon.

Boring, badly manufactured conflicts, barely able to make myself finish it. So why did I? It's hard to stop once I'm started!!

Tobias Wolff was a professor at Stanford. He was my friend Laurel's Italian partner. His friends called him Toby. He scared the bejesus outta me. This is technically unfair, as I never once spoke to him or took one of his classes. I think it was the mustache that did it. It was a very intimidating mustache. Of course, none of this has anything to do with the book, which I loved. I just thought you'd like to know.

Read this in my 9th grade Honors English class! It made an impression on me, but I didn't do very well in the class. LOL!

I picked this book up on a whim...the cover art caught my eye. I was taken in right away...I love books like that. I found the story original and beautifully told. A very enjoyable read.

"We never consider that the things dogs know about us are things of which we have not the faintest notion." "...life is an orchestra which is always playing, in tune or out, a titanic that is always sinking and always rising to the surface..." It took getting through half the novel before I was completely won over.

This book covers so much ground and in such a poignant fashion that anyone that reads it will gleam something different from it. I’ve given it to a lot of people, and like most books as gifts have to face the, “What’s it about?” What’s it about? It’s about World War II, it’s about creative expression, it’s about the persecution of the Jews, it’s about sexual identity, it’s about doing what you think is right, it’s about not doing what you know you have to, it’s about a guy in tights punching out Hitler to sell radios, it’s about COMICS! I never answer that question. I just tell people to read it and find out for themselves.

The descriptions talked about this book's beautiful depictions of Rome and the expatriots who work at the paper, so for some reason I was a picturing a work similar to Hemmingway's A Moveable Feast. Really, it's just a series of loosely interconnected short stories about some of the loneliest creatures you can imagine. All of the stories/chapters/whatever become really predictable (just picture the most sadistic thing to possibly happen to the main character of that chapter and it will come to pass) and the voice of each chapter did not seem to vary much even though they were being shown from the viewpoint of very different characters. If you looking for an episodic novel, I would highly suggest Jennifer Egan's A Visit From the Goon Squad over this one.
