An ancient alien rivalry comes to Metropolis and as usual, the world's greatest Detective is on to him. If you love superman and batman together, this is a pretty good read.

I was having a hard time getting used to the way everyone talked in this book and some of the words they were using...it could be because I'm not used to steampunk. But I did start to like it towards the end.

Maybe I waited until I was too old to read Alexander, but I find his contrived Welsh sytle and obvious borrowings from Celtic-Saxon mythology to be cloying, not interesting.

It was interesting. A bit predictable and not terribly gripping, but certainly interesting. Pratchett intentionally left some open-ended questions for the reader to ponder about the role of religion in our society, as well as certain "what if's" concerning our history. While reading, my main question was the setting -- I couldn't figure out if it was some thriving culture in the far future, after an apocalypse of some sort had scoured our world and forced us to start anew, or if it was a parallel universe. Pratchett clears up this question in the afterword, or "author's note," but it's never made quite clear (although hinted at) in the actual story. This isn't a major detraction, but it did annoy me a little.

The Bloodgate Guardian, by Joely Sue Burkhart, was my first foray into her world of fiction. And what a world it is. Her skills are evident in the research of the subject matter and in the layers of intrigue as she weaves the fantastic with the mundane. Though I’ve always had an interest in archaeology and ruins, I seldom read fantasy that encompasses those areas. I decided to take a chance on this book, however, and see if it would be as boring and butchered as I feared. To my delight, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Few fantasies delve into Mayan culture to the extent covered here. So it was like a breath of fresh air to read about Mayan ruins, religion, and culture, and modern man’s attempts to uncover secrets better left alone. Ms. Burkhart’s use of language, location, history, and folklore impart a sense of credibility to the tale. Tying these together is a story of human greed, rejection, death, despair, triumph, and love, and they’re woven tightly enough to allow me to suspend disbelief. Written in first person, split narrative, there were occasional bumps where the transition could have been a bit smoother, but they weren’t noticeable enough to detract from the story. Overall, I would recommend this book as an interesting change of pace from vampires and werewolves. I haven’t seen any mention of a series, but I would definitely buy the next book.

Freshman year in high school this was a class read that we did. The book was an assignment really. I will admit upfront that I am not a big fan of old literature. I dunno if its the way it is written or because the books are just from a time that is just too ifferent from my own for me to be able to really truley grasp it and immerse myself in it. On one hand I will admit this book is no different than any other of its time, being written in a way that shows its age a bit. It isn't a boring read though, and really its one of the better pieces of older lit I have read. The characters are classic and well developed, the story is easy to follow and intriging, and most importantly it has a point that isnt drawn out in the way its presented, commenting on hu.am nature in a way. we all have two sides really and the author captures that in this usng the potion and cience as a way to show thta. Even if you dispise old lit this i one old piece i will gladly call a classic and highly reccomend to anyone looking for a good story that isnt too long or drawn out.
This book is amazing. So well-written and a wonderful story.

Received for review from netgalley. This is an interesting read, well written, and the characters are believable and engaging. The juxtaposition of the character's lives illustrates the adage, 'the more things change, the more they stay the same.' A novel exploring the many ways in which humanity is trapped by its very nature. Full of mystery, loss and (the possible) supernatural. The novel follows two women trapped by their own lives and ambitions, one by the pursuit of fame and fortune, and another by the promise and tragedy of lost love. Both become paralyzed by indecisiveness when presented with the possibility of a different life, and their hesitations ensure they remain entrenched in their present circumstances.
