This was one of the first books assigned to read for a YA literature course that I took in grad school. This was published in the 1940s, so needless to say, I really couldn't relate with the situations--times sure have changed! I could see why girls of the time may have been attracted to it. I'm sure it was a bit scandalous for its time. But I'm not entirely sure that the novel has stood the test of time.

Momo is a little orphan girl who lives in the ruins of an old amphitheatre in the midst of a bustling city. The people of the neighborhood around the ruins are all friends with Momo, because she has several rare abilities. She is very very very good at listening, and after telling her their problems, Momo’s friends are generally able to come up with solutions. Momo is also able to make any game fun, which makes her pretty popular with the neighborhood children. So Momo lives in the city with her friends, having a fine time, until one day a group of mysterious men in gray suits arrive. At this point, of course, the reader is thinking “Oh noes! Something bad is about to happen,” and the reader is right: the men in gray are time-theives. They steal people’s spare time, so that the people are always in a hurry to get everything done, and they never have a moment to relax, so they get very tense and angry. And Momo’s adult friends all get too busy to come and see her, and they put the children in special centers to help them learn all the time so as not to waste a moment. So it’s up to Momo to save the town from the men in the gray suits. The story is kind of like an extended fable, and the climax comes pretty quickly (almost a deus ex machina, actually), and I didn’t like that so much. Nevertheless, the message is a good one, and we should all use our time wisely, which doesn’t mean hurrying around everywhere, but making time for relaxing, too. Sometimes I think we forget to do this. Maybe I’ll go sit on my porch and watch the world go by for a bit today.

A fun and easy read, though I have to admit I skipped over many of the battle details (which was my dad's favorite part). Very clever twists to the story that keep you interested until the very end. I read this on vacation, and think that this is a fantastic plane book.
