I guess I'm mildly obsessed with this guy, but he's good, I swear. This is his most lovey dovey, which isn't saying much.

This is between a 3.5 and 4 for me. Part of the story is so well developed, and the writing is amazing. Another part of the story didn't hold up as well for me. Review to come.

900 pages of nothing but primary source documents from Jamestown from 1607-1617. Regular people like us exploring a new world with the charter to "enlarge the gospel"

Okay, so I finished the book, and thought it was quite enjoyable; it also gave me an insight into Nicholas Sparks life, and the many trials that he has gone through. I feel like he is a "down to earth" man, and very religious. I also loved the way he wrote the book. One chapter was about his AMAZING trip with his brother, and then the next chapter would be about his life - growing up, family, school, marriage, etc. I have read quite a few of his books, and am listening to another one right now...it's interesting how I can see the comparison to his own life in his fictional books.

Couldn't put this one down. A shocking story. Made me really think about modern race relations and some other things. What I'm taking away from this book is that, as a human being, I need to immediately confront any lingering remnants of racism among people I know. Malcolm took a confrontational stand to racism, believing that the civil rights movement need not be a "process." It is completely unjustified and unacceptable. Period.

Woolf is not for the feint of language or mind. The most accessible book she has ever written is probably Orlando, but To the Lighthouse is my personal favorite. She explores her subjects from the inside out so critics of her work sometimes have a hard time with a less than tangible plot. But the beauty of Virginia Woolf is her way of honing in on these small, seemingly insignificant moments of life and exploring their importance. Her work requires patience and commitment but if you give yourself over to the grace of her language, you will not be sorry.
Everyone should read this book.

This book took me forever to get through in part because of the mass market format for the copy I had (forced me to hold it with two hands and couldn't multitask) but also because it was just not my thing. It gave me a couple of bad dreams and I took time off from it too. It took about a month to get through the first half, while I read a bunch of other books too. I was determined to finish though because Jim said it was one of his favorite books ever and gave me a copy someone left in our lunch room at work. Anyway The book is very dated, which is to be expected since it was published almost 25 years ago (in 1987). It was hard to ignore though because the book kept making references to THE SOVIETS. Oh no! The Soviets!! So everytime I read that it made me laugh a little inside which I am sure was not the author's intention. It was also a bit strange for me to read a book that felt modern, but made almost no mention of computers. At the very end of the book they got an IBM PC... ooooohhhh. The story was ok but the characters where pretty shallow and overall it doesn't really stand up to 25 years of the world changing.
