Nothing more than a good beach read. I have to say though, I was slightly disappointed with the movie - it left so many things out!

You have to REALLY be into both environmentalism and political history to not fall asleep. I read this because my most favorite of favorite professors tried to push this book on all his students. He never made it required reading, but it was that book that the A students went out to find and talk to him about. Before you go falling in love with The Monkey Wrench Gang, find out a little bit about why taking out Dams is such a good idea.

This book was good. It really made me appreciate how easy my Guatemalan adoption was. It's a very intimate look into the mind of the adoptive mother and just scratches the surface on all the emotions involved. This would be good for anyone who has ever been curious about adoption and/or Guatemala.

In the first scene in this book, Caitlin (main character) discovers that her sister, Cass, has run away from home to live with her boyfriend--Cass is 18 and about to go to Yale, while Caitlin is the underachiever of the family. Dessen weaves an intuitively beautiful tale from Caitlin's perspective as she meets and falls in love with Rogerson, a young, wealthy drug dealer. As her family copes with Cass' disappearance, Caitlin seems to recede further into her new world. Just finished this...the second third of the book was very difficult to read--as in completely enveloping but so heartwrenching that I had to put it down a bunch of times. I don't want to give too much away, but it turns out Rogerson is abusive. The rest of the story is about how Caitlin deals with this. I am curious what Sarah Dessen's other books are like. I have read that some of them are wonderful, others not so much. She is quite prolific. In all, this was a good book. Did get sappy toward the end, bordering on corny teen problem novel. But I think her writing and portrayal of Caitlin saved it. All in all, a good but difficult read.

Interesting read and a great fictional work. Its political implications are mired in the loose, moralistic arena of post-colonial studies. bleh.

Out of Control, Suzanne Brockmann - I pretty much enjoyed the central romance in this story though not quite as much as the unconventional and acerbic secondary one between "Jones," the ex-soldier/mercenary on the run, and Molly, the missionary. The central romance though is between Savannah and Karmody and it was genuinely sweet and romantic in places. However, and here's where I feel tepid endorsement for Brockmann's books in general, I'm not drawn to the military genre and so I feel less enthusiasm for the gung-ho appeal of SEAL team characters and their exploits around the globe. Within the context of this book, I also find myself cringing often when reading dialogue, such as the two leading characters calling each other by nicknames within 24 hours of meeting or Karmody telling Savannah, "Love ya, babe" after their first date. I also felt a little beat over the head at times when we are informed repeatedly that Savannah is a trouper and never complains, which is why Karmody changes his mind about her and realizes she's more than a spoiled rich girl. I know this is a book that wants to excite readers by displaying the acumen of trailed military superheroes, and that we're supposed to appreciate how lucky Savannah is that her new boyfriend is incredibly able to take care of her and keep her safe from terrorists. The messages are loud and clear, but I just find myself skeptical and resistant to them. I've read a handful of Brockmann novels to date based on positive reviews, but overall they're not really for me.
