Awesome general reference for the late 1700's-early 1800's in Europe. Not just military history, which is much easier to find, but notes on the culture and norms of the time, scientific advances, and the arts. Covers Britain AND France, and does a good job; it's a bit like Ferdinand Braudel's stuff, only concentratedon a much narrower time period and geographic area, so it can go much more in-depth. The political discussions are great. I'm reading it mostly for the chapters on Britain, but so far, so good.

Finally finished this book...and it was fantastic. Just one perspective on the situation in Sudan this book also takes on the status of the refugee and, later, the immigration to the United States, all the while pondering that sense of existence, do these people exist if we choose to ignore them? The book challenges us to care, as on the very last page Valentino (through Eggers' pen) says: "It gives me strength to know that you are there. I covet your eyes, your ears, the collapsible space between us...I am alive and you are alive so we must fill the air with our words. I will fill today, tomorrow, every day until I am taken back to God. I will tell stories to people who listen and people who don't listen, to people who seek me out and tho those who run. All the while I will know that you are there. How can I pretend that you do no exist? It would be almost as impossible as you pretending that I do not exist."

This is a hard book to read, and at the same time a glorious revelation into the power of a grieving heart. the specifics of a husband dying and a child suffering aredelivered in a sentence... then the word and world of the book unfold into the beautiful universe of memory, honor, duty, loss, promises, and more. Its a book about love.

My HS library book club chose this as their next book. I read it as soon as it was announced as the Printz 2010, and I read it again nearly a year later. I loved it the first time via audiobook, and I enjoyed it even more when I read it because I could anticipate the Quixote-esque journey. The students didn't generally like it, but they primarily didn't embrace that we were intended to be confused. Perhaps if they had read Don Quixote it would have been different. I still love it!

This book had the unfortunate distinction of being read in a burn-out phase for me. Otherwise, perhaps a 4 star rating. So i will settle for a 3.5 here. Homer is quite verbose as a 12 yr old orphan in search of his brother illegally mustered into service for the Union Army during the Civil War. I loved the weaving of fictional characters w/ historical fact and i would perscribe this book to any of my 8th graders for supplemental reading.

Absolutely a page-turner. Sad story with real characters that you care about. Sebold has a very appealing idea of the afterlife that I fould believable.

It was interesting to read a book that was true and took place in a town I lived in for 3 years! It was crazy that I waited until I lived in Seattle to read it, although I could picture in my head so much of the locale of the book. It was also crazy to kind of see things that changed and things that stayed the same in Muncie. The story itself was crazy, and to see that this kid became the man that he became in the world that he grew up in is amazing. I also have to say that racism makes no sence to me and certianly makes me sick. I also have to add that Gregory's dad was a true Muncie charector!
