Amazing book, scary but MAGNIFICENT. I rated four stars just beause some parts were scary. Anyone who puts it less than four is wrong.

One of the few books that I think is actually worse then the movie. Not to say that this is a bad book by any means at all. It simply isn't nearly as clean or dramatic as the movie. The symbolism and epic struggle between belief and non belief that is central to the movie is hardly a factor in this story. This is a more scientific novel, which while very good in its own merit, is somewhat less compelling then the screenplay derived from it.

this book was a total surprise; i picked it up on the street and was blown away. it is a fictionalized narrative of a war that occurred in southern brazil in the late 19th century. an itinerant preacher espousing his own brand of christian faith wanders southern brazil, eventually gathering thousands of followers from the poorest ranks of brazilian society. they settle in a town called canudos, and are branded traitors by a government in conflict looking for scapegoats. this band of starving fanatics fends off the full force of the brazilian army for an amazing amount of time. the depth of llosa's writing had me wondering what was real and what was fiction even in some of the most fantastic moments. ever read a book and then want everyone you know to read it? yeah, this one.

I liked this book. It's basically a history of the creation of the first antibiotic, and for the most part it was an interesting account, following mostly the story of the scientists who discovered sulfa.

**SPOILERS** My overall impression was "meh" with a resounding yell of rage over a death in the book. If you are still reading and you don't want to know who it is, then stop here. I put quite an investment in this book. I got it on a whim via a sneak peek and enjoyed the first 50 or so pages. But the further I got into the book, the more I disliked Dexter (he's a self loathing alcoholic, after all) and the more frustrated I became with Emma. Not that I didn't fall in love with them because I did. We can all probably name two friends who were always meant to be together but through some combination of hard headedness and bad timing a relationship never worked out. But as we get through the slog of drugs, booze, bad relationships and missed opportunities things start working for our duo. We made it, found a resolution to the madness and really became attached to these people. And just we are about to say that the book was worth the $8 or so we spent, Nicholls kills off Emma and makes us watch Dexter become and even worse person than we already experienced. This idea of love and romance is extremely depressing and disapointing. I'm sure there are those out there who would say I'm missing some piece of the puzzle, not seeing the big picture. Perhaps. But in the end, I just felt sad and relieved that the story was over. And that's usually not the emotion I'm hoping to get when I finish a book.

Sad, confusing, and just plain mean. These people hated with such a passion that it ruined what could have been a true love.

This story is quite different from your usual book about magic heroes. It's more of a tour around the main points of magic stories, the past, the future, some magicians and the land of the faeries. This is by no means my favourite of Gaiman's works but it is really worth reading and somewhat surprising, it has almost nothing to do with what I expected it to be, and that was good. The artwork is great, I'd give it the 5 stars. I should say that I read this too quickly and probably not in the best time to enjoy it. In other reviews some readers suggest the book for Sandman fans, saying that you will enjoy this much more after reading Sandman. So I thought I should state here that I never read Sandman, though I plan on doing so eventually. I might read The Books of Magic again after that.

Darnit! My review disappeared. 3.5 stars I loved both of these books. Adrien is a great character and I loved getting to know him better. Both books do start a little slow though. The mysteries are fun to follow along with and not too heavy or too light. :) I took 1/2 star off each book for Jake. I hate Jake. If I had a Jake in my life, I'd kick his sorry ass to the curb. I found myself actively rooting against any relationship with Adrien and Jake. Adrien cannot save Jake. He cannot change Jake and he certainly cannot make Jake love or accept himself. I have absolutely NO desire to see him try! Adrien is great! Can't wait to see what he gets into next!
