Its actually a novel, cleverly designed to share the history of what happened to the channel islands during the german occupation of world war II. I liked the approach it took in telling the story by personalizing, telling it through individual stories. Good read.

This was very good as a hands on book. I used it for teaching. Several of the students said they liked it because it was more hands on. I felt that it was a bit light on the theory. But it probably gets paired very well with books that are deeper in the how and why because Hernandez does a good job of explaining concepts in english. Also, there were some sections (like diagramming) that I felt that Hernandez was much better then alternatives, because instead of using the full set of UML, he uses a subset that makes sense for what he needs. And this attitude is applied to other topics as well.

This book is still kind of confusing me. There are a lot of interesting characters and some really good stories about these characters in 2666, but there is really no overarching tale. The anecdotes are tied together quite loosely, but well enough that it seems like they all need to be there, and like most good books (in my opinion) there is no conclusion or closure to the questions and mysteries that arise. Overall, I really enjoyed it, and I'll probably read it again, but not for a while as it is quite a long book.

Akože prečítala som to v podstate za deň, ale tie nelogickosti tomu fakt odpustiť nemôžem a ku koncu som už dosť stratila záujem a chcela to len dočítať. Celkom fajn sobota inak. Až na to, že som poriadne skoro nič neurobila, a to som mala veľké plány! :D

When the previous Jessica Darling books came out I read them as soon as they came out . . . but it's been a while since I've read #4 and when I was at a bookstore recently I saw the paperback version of Perfect Fifths and wondered "Hey, why didn't I buy this when it first came out" and about 5 pages into it, I remembered . . . Jessica is annoying. She was a pleasant enough high schooler but the character became more and more pretentious as time has gone by and Marcus went from interesting to intolerable. This book killed pretty much any warm feelings I had about either. It's amusing that the author brings up Before Sunset because I feel like she was trying to copy the styles of those movies the entire novel. It didn't work. It was weird and boring and stitled and I couldn't help but think that if I was sitting next to the two of them in the coffee shop at the airport my eyes would roll out of my head. I hope this is it for Jessica & marcus. I don't want to catch up with them again in 5 years as they have children or something.
I was interested initially because this book is written from the point of view of German women in WWII but there too much sex for my taste.
I keep coming back to it to relearn all the wonderful 'life lessons' contained within.

Some of the the stories were great, some were ok, and some were just grueling. the one about the lady who shops was reminiscent of Dorian Grey with the descriptions going on forever about non-important things, like pots! And some of the stories got a little to sexually explicit for my tastes. But, the Jim Butcher story was awesome and there were a couple of other "jewels."
