it was painful to read this at times, but only because a lot of what the author points out are painful truths.

Carla Neggers starts a new series that promises to be even more exciting and engaging than ever! This book has it all, vibrant characters, strong plot, engaging dialogue and great prose. Neggers is at her best here, drawing the reader into a web of art theft, murder and mystery. Emma Sharpe and Colin Donovan forge a believable bond in the midst of the tension that builds and the relationships among all the characters are true to life and engrossing. Neggers' ability to draw the reader into her created world is at its height here and this should launch this series for a great run. Don't miss it!!

my comments refer to an uncorrected advanced reading copy of When She Woke / Hilary Jordan, to be published early October 2011,,, Most of us of a certain age had to read some literary classics in high school. Most of these gave me cause to revolt, not because the books weren’t good or contained anything of value,’ just because they were assigned reading and a must. One that I can remember liking was Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter. It’s themes of adultery, atonement, guilt were all appealing to my teenage self. So when I read that new book When She Woke was being compared to The Scarlet Letter, I was up for the read. I begged a copy of the galley from Michael Rockliff, Director, Library Sales and Marketing, Workman Publishing Company and he kindly obliged. If family and work had left me to my own devices I’m certain I could have read this in one sitting. I was immediately hooked by Hannah Payne’s story of a secret affair with a married man, one of cloth to boot. The resulting pregnancy leads to abortion and when found out, this good Christian community punishes its sinners by chroming, a method by which a virus is injected causing the skin to become a hue according to your crime. In the opening chapter we find twenty-six year old Hannah Payne as she awakes in a futuristic prison, a room with four walls and mirrors, where her every move is watched by cameras and where she begins her 30 day sentence as a Red. This imprisonment is only the beginning of a long sentence, 16 years with Red skin, shunned by society and forced to make her way as a scorned women. I really liked the beginning of When She Woke. There was much to explore about familial love and loyalty, religion, whose right it is to judge. I had trouble with some of the decisions Jordan made in carrying out her plot. Some things didn’t quite work for me. This is the prerogative of the author however, and who am I to say her choices were wrong. Jordan drew me back into the story in the end and I absolutely loved the closing line which I thought was perfect. Readers liking feminist fiction, those who were enraptured by Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale or The Scarlet Letter and who like an imaginative story that makes you think, should enjoy When She Woke. I can see it as a good book group choice as there is much to discuss and debate; perhaps some of those choices I allude to but don’t specifically mention.

If you can stick with it you will learn much of what is to know of Latin from 750BC to the translating of two Harry Potter books. There is much that is interesting to the layman but also, for the layman, it has more than you really wanted to know.

Murakami's writing style is lovely and frustrating at the same time. He begins with perfectly good stories and then proceeds to twist them into grotesque monsters of confusing sequencing and ridiculous dialogue. I keep trying for Murakami's sake, but he has yet to convince me any of his books are worth the time invested.

A bit hard to switch time with the author. Especially since the characters were having similar experiences with their parents, I had a hard time keeping up with the switches, but then again, I did not have time to really devote to the book and had to set it down and come back to it. I guess part of the message of the book though is the interchangeability of generations. We are not really so different from those who came before us.

This is one of the most creative concepts in the history of literature. Beyond the very interesting and heartbreaking story, the prose is unbelieveable. Definitely one of my all-time favorites. Gorgeous novel.

The Little Guide to Your Well-Read Life, by Steve Leveen (I really enjoyed the book; I don’t necessarily agree with all of it, e.g., having a large Library of Candidates - books I purchase for reading "someday"; but, I like his thoughts on me expressing my own personality by picking my own books, not by necessarily reading just the so-called Great Books; I also liked his thoughts on writing comments, questions, and other thoughts in the margins of books; his thoughts on audio books and reading groups also were interesting.)
