Yeah, i'm going through a "what does it all mean" phase too -- i'm not so sure it's a phase anymore at this point. anyhow, sarah macdonald writes a highly relatable "stranger in a strange land" memoir chock full of info-tainment. You get to hang out with her and her girlfriends and get the real scoop on indian social mores while she explores her own spirituality in a land of magical gods n' goddesses and sprinkles in some rich historical details for good measure. This is a rockin' good read.

Rated 5 stars for being an excellently written, terrifying, insightful about modern governments, and a personal favorite read. I think 1984 should be required reading for everyone living in the modern world, not just because it's a great piece of fiction (which I think it is), but because it describes the aims and methods of totalitarian governments so well. 1984 is one of the most terrifying books I have ever read. It prophecies present and future dystopia where the sophisticated machinations of an almighty state have crushed and enslaved the individual with no hope of release. The current U.S. government, with it's increased infotainment, doublespeak, secrecy, stripping away of rights and freedoms, prison camps, use of war and terror to enforce obedience and control of the populace, etc. lurches us just that much closer to something out of this book.
