This book spawned a wonderful imaginary life for me...living in a museum, what could be better! One of my childhood favorites that I cannot wait to read to my own kids.

"The Secret Life of Bees" is a coming-of-age story about a young girl named Lily Owens. Escaping her abusive father, Lily sets out on a journey to discover the truth about her deceased mother and herself. Lily finds help along the way with a family of bee-keeping sisters, and a group of women called "The daughters of Mary." Set in the 1960's south, the book runs a little cliche here and there, however, it's still a sweet read about women for women. A definite recommend!

Originally on From Book to Hooked. The Body Finder was an amazing book! It has a really unique idea, and Kimberly Derting has created quite the world for us. The romance between Jay and Violet is breathtaking, and the suspense kept me reading until a pretty late hour, so I'd recommend checking this book out if you haven't already. Violet has a morbid ability to sense the echoes left behind by the dead, and the imprint attached to their killers. When a serial killer sets his sights on the town, Violet feels she might be able to put her ability to good use and stop him. With the help of her best friend, Jay, who she's falling in love with, Violet might be getting closer to discovering the serial killer. Only problem? Now he has his sights set on her. The murder mystery aspect of this book was really well done. I've always loved those murder mystery TV shows, and this is even better. Know why? Not only does Kimberly Derting incorporate murder mystery, but there's a paranormal aspect and a romance. This series is in my top ten. I liked Violet as a character. I think she dealt with her ability really well, and that's got to be a creepy thing to live with. She also had a brain. *pleased* She did make a few bad choices, but that happens to the best of us. Overall, she was a strong, smart, relatable character. Jay was... Well, Jay was Jay. And I liked Jay. He was protective of Violet, which was really sweet. I absolutely loved the dialouge between Violet and Jay. Their relationship was very realistic and filled with flirting and tension. *insert more fangirly gushing here* The writing, characters, and plot Derting created are amazing as is this story. I can't wait to read the next in the series, and even though I don't need to say this, I'm hooked!

"In all the world there was nothing but Food -- glorious Food. And Beer -- October Beer. The world was one enormous Belly -- there was no higher heaven than the Paradise of Cram and Gorge." Heaven indeed!

I'm not usually much of a non-fiction reader, but this book is truly one-of-a-kind. It alternates telling the stories of the men responsible for the Chicago's World Fair, and the murderer who plied his trade during the same time. It practically reads like fiction, and Larson's prose will keep you turning pages long after you've told yourself to put the book down.

** spoiler alert ** In the third volume of the Spellmans series, our intrepid heronine Isabel is in court-ordered therapy after ignoring a restraining order filed by her neighbour. Isabel is also taking a self-inflicted break from the family detective agency and working in her friend Milo's bar. Her brother David asks her to house-sit for him, and she discovers that he has an empty apartment in his basement, which comes in handy when she loses her job at the bar. She secretly moves into the apartment, whilst working on a case for a friend of Milo's, attending therapy sessions, and trying to decide what she wants to do with her life. The Spellmans are an interesting, if unusual family. Isabel's generation all grew up in the family firm, and while her older brother David decided not to continue in the business, Isabel did. However, she has a great deal of difficulty differentiating the business of a private detective from regular life, and treats most of her daily activities and contacts as if they were investigations. I loved this book, but I do have a problem with the footnotes, which I find terribly distracting.
