I have checked this out from the library a couple of times and I just can't make it through, but the first 50-100 pages are awesome.

This was amazing....there are not enough words to tell of the awesomeness of this title. Although others find it muddled and a bit schizophrenic..I did not find it to be the case. I do not know if everyone can appreciate the nature of the tale. But I found it to be unique in a world of YA literature that just all feels the same. Flora is strong and NOT ANGSTY...which is rare. Her sidekick is amusing and full of life. Characterizations...amazing. Plot is good and surprising. Characters are multi-leveled with no one all good or all bad. Excellent with a capital E! From School Library Journal: Flora Fyrdraaca is approaching 14, the age of majority, and preparing for its celebratory Catorcena. She lives in Crackpot Hall, a once-glorious but now decaying home with 11,000 rooms that randomly shift positions. Her mother is the Warlord's Commanding General and a workaholic. Her father, a broken man due to his past imprisonment for war crimes, is most often an enraged drunk who trashes the house. Oversleeping one morning, Flora uses the forbidden Elevator to get her overdue library book and finds herself in a strange part of the house where Valefor, the family butler, has been banished. He is losing his Anima and convinces Flora to let him suck some of hers, which causes her to develop Anima Enervation, and she begins to fade. Here the complicated plot in this overlong first novel becomes as shifting and rambling as Crackpot Hall itself. Flora and her friend Udo try to find a fetish or Semiote Verb to restore Valefor, but then get waylaid. Flora uncovers why Poppy is such a broken man, swims in the slimy pond in her garden to touch the refreshing Current and be restored, and much more-all in the week preceding her Catorcena.

This book is now one of my favorites, I love how it takes you back to the 1500's and you get a real feel for the era. I like how it explains and emphasizes the importance of social status in this time period and it is interesting to look at how social status today is similar and different from what it appeared to be back in the 1500's. Today social status is important but in a different way, now it is all about your appearances, who you socialize with, and how many people like/hang out with you but, in the 1500's, it was mostly about the marital status that made your social status noticeable. It was all about marrying the wealthiest man, who was well known with a great title. Women fought over the attention of the royals and were assigned who they would marry by there parents. Times have changed a lot about the social status, but the difference is what made me facinated with this book. I could NOT put it down!

This book reminded me a lot of my favorite book The Sound and the Fury, but more magical and less esoteric. Really enjoyed it. My first book on my Kindle!

It's a lot of Vonnegut ranting, which is something I love, but if you don't love that I can see how you might not love this book.

3.5. ish. ~~~~~~~~ *sigh* not what I was expecting. has anyone ever heard of "first is the worst, second the best.." and so on? well, except for the first wasn't the worst. whatever. I apologize for my very wimpy.reviews. so i'm gonna try to de-wimpifize this one. Evie is a "bag and tag" expert at the IPCA. except for the fact that there was no "bagging and tagging". whats up with that? Lend. lend, lend, lend. second favorite character. hes cool though. JACK. I. love. you. he's psycho! and thats why hes my favorite! he left her in the "faerie" paths. in the dark. YES! he's awesome & nuts! once upon a time, there was a guy with an attachment to a rather annoying girl. and his name is Reth. let. it. go. please leave. enough with all of this romantic crap! find. someone. else. Raquel. am I the only one who wants to punch her? shes like, "oh its all up to you to decide". and then like, "HA! nevermind. go find a paranormal, cause I say so! but hey! don't kill yourself! *sigh*" that made no sense. sorry. I miss tasey. now Evie feels all wimpy without that thing. she was all tough in the first book, and shes like oh im in love! nothing else matters! im sooo glad that jack was there, or I wouldve been boooored. all in all, it was ok. I didn't really want to even read this book but I wanted to finish the series. I'll still read the third book. ~~~~~~~ oh bleep, that was long. happy reading! -missrosey :) (that was still wimpy, sorry)

This is the third book in the SWORD OF SHADOWS series. It is a good addition, furthering the stories of Ash, Raif, Effie, and Raina (as well as Vaylo Bludd). For some reason I had originally thought that this series was a trilogy only, but after completing A SWORD FROM RED ICE, it is apparent that more books are needed. I look forward to them - J.V. Jones is a wonderful fantasy writer, and one of my favorites in the genre.
My first time reading this author's work. Couldn't put the book down - read it in two days. Heartbreak felt real when the couple were in danger of losing their adopted daughter, and fighting the system where politics were involved seemed like an unwinable battle. Only reason I did not rate it higher was the reason why the birth father and his father wanted the child back - I found it very disturbing to say the least.
