Note: I received an Advance Review Copy of this book for free through Goodreads First Reads. Have you ever wanted to go to dragon camp? If so, then Slayers is the book for you! Slayers takes place in a world where dragons exist, and they’ve acquired some extraordinary abilities in order to keep their species going, such as laying eggs that incubate for over a hundred years before hatching. Medieval warriors developed special powers in order to fight dragons, and the modern-day descendants of these “slayer-knights” have inherited their ancestors’ abilities. In modern-day America, the foremost authority on dragons has been recruiting these young slayers, enlisting their help for the near-future battle sure to come when the newest generation of eggs hatches. While most of the slayers have attended “dragon camp” since the age of ten or eleven, the novel’s protagonist, Tori, is just discovering the fact that dragons exists, that they’re deadly—and that she’s one of the few who can fight them—at the age of sixteen. I have to admit some aspects of the novel’s mythology seem overly convenient and even a bit silly, such as the fact that the slayers’ powerful DNA is somehow “turned on” before their birth if their pregnant mothers come within close proximity of a dragon egg. (Not a spoiler—it’s in the first chapter.) However, if you’re willing to suspend your disbelief and just go with it, Slayers is a really fun ride! Slayers is well plotted and written, with a fast pace and a clear, upbeat writing style. C.J. Hill is a pseudonym for experienced YA novelist Janette Rallison (again not a spoiler—you can find the info on her website) and her expertise really shows. I especially appreciated the fact that Tori is almost the exact opposite of the über-tough heroines we’ve seen in so much YA fiction lately. While I love Katsa from Graceling and Katniss from Hunger Games, I was able to identify with Tori more easily. As a senator’s daughter, Tori is a bit, well, spoiled, and at many points she wishes she could ditch the dragon slaying and go shopping instead. Her faults and foibles as a character make it that much more satisfying to watch her grow over the course of the novel—and they also provide some great moments of humor. One concern I do have is that the cover and blurb of Slayers seem to be aimed at the preteen male, Eragon and Lightning Thief crowd, and I’m not sure that’s really the ideal audience for this book. While some male readers will probably appreciate the action, I think Tori’s POV might appeal more to teen girls. Hopefully, though, this book will find the right readers—and I’m sure a sequel or two is in store.

I like Hard Love becauase it was refreshing. I likde the dynamics of the relationship between the main character and all the people around him. I got midway throught the book and thought I had it all figured out, but I didn't. So, stick with it, you won't be disappointed.

Full of pictures and detailed information about places and items. Great for helping understand context.

I used this book in a course I taught on the food industry in America. It was eye-opening, but not as shocking as Omnivore's Dilemma (of which I STILL Have to read the last chapter) or Food, Inc. I do think it was an easier read than OD. I try not to eat at fast food joints to begin with, but this book taught me another reason to stay away: employee abuse.

[no spoilers] One of my favorite books ever. I don't know is how time will affect my opinion of it, but I think it could last. It's a novel about the normal and the eccentric, about learning, about languages, music, art, and Kurosawa. It's about the shape of brilliance. It doesn't sacrifice philosophy or intellectualism for narrative power or vice versa. Each smaller narrative wound into the whole is like story-candy. There is nothing to dislike: the style, the form, the content, the mood, the characters, the story -- it is to me as if this book were given every beneficial adaptation by a doting god, and then set free in a tiny corner of the wild. I am astonished that it has not yet driven its competitors to extinction. It is unbalanced.

This book changed my life. It help me better understand what God wants from me. Written in Modern English it was very easy to understand. The commentary helped make sense what verse was applicable in what situation the Prophet (S) and the Sahabas (R) were facing. I don't think anyone can truly called themselves learned until they have read any translation of Quran a number of times. I recommend this to people who are having problems in their life and Muslims who are suffering from insomnia. Place this book next to your bed and when you can't sleep pick it up and read. Make dua that Allah to remove any veils on our hearts and open the Quran to us... both in recitation and understanding. People do not emphasize the importance of understanding the Quran. These are the words of Allah. Allah gives us examples of who to follow and who not to follow. If you haven't read this book, don't let the Shaytan make you delay. Order it from the internet www.islamicbookstore.com or any other site or many local mosques have it as well. Be sure to buy the All english translation (I prefer the hardcover but hard to find).\ My only complaint is the introduction is too long and there are some questionable translations when compared to other translators. One must remember that the Quran is only in Arabic and no translation can come close to the original form. Written in modern english makes it much easier to understand but I would consider Yusuf Ali's translation to be more accurate but harder to understand.
