Very well written book with some very interesting themes. Gripping from page 1, even though the actual Games don't begin until 1/3 of the way through. Shares themes with various sources, from the short story "The Lottery" to Ender's Game to Survivor. However, what makes the book so captivating isn't the plot - though that is certainly a driving element - it is the character development and back story along with Collins' precise attention to detail without being overwrought. As long as the reader is willing and capable of suspending disbelief enough to fully commit, it is an exhilarating story that is not too far out of the realm of possibility. Be prepared for an emotional, thrilling, unsettling, funny, frightening and thought-provoking adventure. Now onto Book Two!

at first glance i thought the artwork looked stunning. but i quickly became quite unimpressed with the lack of shading. the style uses a lot of block colours, which i thought i would like because it emphasises shape. but in combination with some rather murky colour choices and occasional use of dodgey gradients, i ended up not really going for this style at all. interestingly they sometimes use a really bright red for hellboy which is so bright i assume it's a special ink on top of the standard CMYK. i found the story in this first volume a bit generic/cliché. but the main characters themselves are quite unique and interesting. It will take a few volumes to flesh them out adequately though i think.

This book made me laugh, made me cry, and gave me a lot to think about. I really want to meet Oogy! This should be required reading for all animal lovers. Though the story was organized a little strangely to me at first, it all worked out into a beautiful story about the dog who wasn't expected to survive and his loving family.

Just about my favorite subject right now: How the citizens of Europe rallied together and (whether we know this or not) live courageous lives and endured the changes war brought to their lives. Great read.
