Probably best for gr. 5-8. I did not enjoy this as much as the author's Surviving Antarctica, but it is a good story from the point of view of a 6th grade boy who is physically disabled and has difficulty speaking. In the 1960's, when this story is set, disabled children often did not attend school, and Sam's first experiences with school are met with limited expectations from school personnel and his fellow students. Thanks in part to the persistence of his caretaker, Mrs. Perkins, he is able to be seen for who he is until circumstances land him in an institution. There is a happy ending, though, with an afterword that describes what happened to the characters.

This book was a great read. I had seen it in the library months ago and thought I might like it, had it for weeks but never got to read it. Months later I picked it up again thinking "oh yeah... maybe I'll actually read it this time. Well it didn't happen once again. Finally about a month ago I picked up the first 2 books on tape, ( I like listening before bed) and I saw this one in new release that looked cool. I brought them home along with countless others and pulled out the new release one. What I'd missed when I'd grabbed it was "The Thrilling Conclusion To the Trilogy..." I was mad... I hate it whe that happens. I glanced at the author name which looked familiar. Then I realized it was the same as the 2 I had been so off and on about reading. I then knew it was destiny for me to read this series. Okay aside from the thrilling tale of how I came to read this book my details. The story was chilling, wrapping you into it. At certain points it was very perdictable, but the sort of perdictableness that only adds to the story. Descriptions of characters and interactions were excellent. This one of the best sereis I have read in a while.

The Pink Carnation series has been one of the most witty, engaging, and outright original series that I have read in a very long time. The narrator of the series is excellent, causing a listener to feel like they really are part of the narrative instead of only listening to it his or her car. I would recommend this book to anyone.
