Spoilers ahead, read with caution... First off, I LOVED the cover. Didn't quite get it at first, but after reading the book it is profound symbolism at its best (and yes, I say this even though this book is young adult fiction for teens). The year is around 2025. The last known Polar bear has died, the country has just elected the second female president. California was decimated by an earthquake and two whole communities fell into the ocean, transgenetic animals and plants have been engineered to help human kind, and an epidemic caused by the overuse of antibiotics has killed over 20 million people. Medical science has grown by leaps and bounds and there was an accident. Jenna has just woken up, but why can't she remember the accident, or who she is, where she has come from, who her parents are, what the word cold means, everything. Her mother and brilliant doctor who is her father tell her to be patient telling her it will all come back. They have her watch her entire life told through the eyes of the family's video camera. The new Jenna feels empty, alone. She doesn't know who this old Jenna is and strange ideas and images are coming back to her all the time. Who is really Jenna? The daughter that her parents loved, adored, a miracle baby or is she something not quite there, not quite human, something different? Pearson has created a future world that is not so distant from our own that is remarkably believable and in all honesty seems like it is coming true sooner than we think. I dove through this book in less than a day. One of the reviews on the back of the book states "this is a beautiful blend of science fiction, medical thriller, and teen-relationship novel that melds into a seamless whole..." I couldn't agree more. The issues that Pearson creates are ones that I definitely believe that our society today is already struggle with. When is there too much science involved? What is an individual? Do children "owe" their parents their allegiance and love? What rights do a parent have over their children's bodies? How far should the medical field go in the quest for saving a life? Are advances in technology always good and to be used? Are there worse things than dying? Issues that should be dealt with sooner than later. Some not having quite clear black and white answers at all. And even Pearson addresses that in her epilogue... Loved the book, loved the issues addressed, loved how it made me think--A LOT. The ending threw me a little and I'm still thinking about how I feel about the whole thing...
