Having read Tribes from Seth Godin and enjoyed it I decided to give Purple Cow a go. Written in a very similar, easy-reading style, I took away two key messages from Purple Cow: 1. Be Remarkable 2. Focus on the Innovators and Early Adopters Every day, consumers come face to face with a lot of boring stuff, a lot of brown cows, but you can bet they won't forget a Purple Cow. By building remarkable features into products (as opposed to thinking of marketing as just slapping some paint on top of the product or service) the idea is that the Innovators and Early Adopters (aka the "Sneezers") will essentially sell the product or service for you. It is therefore important to ensure that it is an easy sell for them. I found many of the examples to be a bit too US centric but the key points were still easy to comprehend. Whilst the message is very simple, this book provides some great motivational passion for creating products that stand out and make a difference. A recommended read.

The matriarch, the leader of the Drood's, has been murdered in cold blood....and some in the family are thinking that Eddie and Molly had something to do with it. Out to prove their innocence and to stop Doctor Delirium from using the apocalypse door, Eddie and Molly set off on their biggest adventure to date. Along the way an old rogue returns, the family is attacked in its home base, and an ancient powerful is revealed at last. And only the Drood's...with the help of some of Frankenstein's creatures, stand in the way. This is a typical Simon R. Green work, fast paced, full of action, tired cliches, and a story that keeps you coming back for more. If you've not read in the Drood universe before, put the book down and go pick up the first one. Even though you can read these out of order it really does help to have the background of what's gone on before (and just because their fun books to read.) This isn't the best book of the series and Green does tend to drag on a bit with describing some of the battle scenes and action which draws the book out a bit. He also repeats a lot of the same phrases in the book and from earlier books, which to me takes away a bit. Overall though, its another rousing book in the series and sets the stage for something even bigger.

02/16/2006 We need more! We need more! The `Incoherence of the Philosophers' (Tahafut al-falasifa) is part of a series of books in which Ghazali intended to explain his position vis-a-vis philosophy and kalam. (For our purposes here, Kalam is speculative theology.) The first book, `The Aims of the Philosophers' (Maqasid al-falasifa), is a fair and neutral exposition of the philosophy of Avicenna. Indeed, as Marmura notes, Ghazali "wrote this work of exposition to explain the philosophers' theories as a prelude to his refuting them in the Tahafut." Note that although Ghazali speaks of both al-Farabi and Avicenna in the Incoherence he usually is speaking of Avicenna. The next book in the series is this book, the Incoherence, and it is intended to be the refutation of philosophy. Then comes `the Standard for Knowledge' (Mi'yar al-'ilm) which, according to Marmura, "is an exposition of Avicennan logic, the most comprehensive of such expositions that al-Ghazali wrote." Ghazali considered logic philosophically neutral and thus a fitting tool for both theologians and jurists. Note that this position is itself controversial among the defenders of orthodoxy - see, for example, what Ibn Taymiyya says about Greek logic. Now, Ghazali considered his work on logic an appendix to the Tahafut. Lastly, in this series, Ghazali writes his `Moderation in Belief' (Al-iqtisad fi al-i'tiqad) which is an exposition of Kalam, specifically, Ash'arite theology. This Ash'arite theology is the type of Kalam that Ghazali then adhered to. Of this Marmura says that in, "the Tahafut al-Ghazali intended to refute and negate; in the Iqtisad, to build and affirm what he declared to be true doctrine." So you see that the Tahafut is only part of a series of books that presented Ghazali's comprehensive position on philosophy (and kalam) at this point in his career. We now need the Islamic Translation Series to publish these companion pieces of the Tahafut so we too can see Ghazali's comprehensive view. ...But keep in mind that this is not his final view; after writing these books (1091-1095) Ghazali had his spiritual crises that led to his turn toward mysticism. This is, btw, a fine bilingual edition superbly translated; both Marmura and the Islamic Translation Series deserve to be proud. For those of you that still want more turn to the reply of the falasifa in Averroes, `the Incoherence of the Incoherence' (Tahafut al-Tahafut), which has been translated by Simon Van Den Bergh and contains over 200 pages of notes! I only give 4 stars (instead of 5) until the three books that were meant by Ghazali to be read with the Incoherence are translated and published.

I tried to read this, I love a good apocalyptic read. But the plot was slow, the characterization laughable (especially the dialogue) and the sense that the book was sadistically written as a sort of joyous "in your face" from the in-crowd, now in heaven, to the out crowd, all us sinners on earth. Good riddance.

This could almost be a sequal to Starship Troopers. Steakley takes a little less political stance than Heinlein. This book is action packed and really shows you the violence of war. The dialogue of the soldiers is realistic. This book captures the soul of the common soldier.

From the beginning, Dostoevsky sucks readers into a character who seeks to justify himself with a faulty logic driven by menacing bitterness. The first half of the book is an overwhelming philosophical "writing" by the narrator. It is difficult to understand, yet what the simultaneously sucks the reader in and disgusts the reader is the bitterness driving this man. He is a complex entity, full of brokenness and loneliness, yet it is his hatred that permeates in the reader, almost infecting the reader like it does him. The repetition in the novel can seem tedious, but it's effect is tremendous. The second half of the book is narrative, accounting for his bitterness. It reads faster than the first half without losing the intensity that the philosophical account set up. Indeed, those ideas develop the narrative portion well. Despite the narrative section even having a somewhat reflective tone, I still felt like I was in the experience, watching and feeling what this man was going through. From menial job, to dinner party with old peers, to whorehouse this book builds a connection that will reveal much to the reader.
