After having read the first five books of this series one after the other, I find I'm rather depressed. It was nice for the orphans to have made some friends, however. Snicket's defining words as they relate to his story instead of the dictionary definitions has become more egregious. Inevitable does not, ever, mean "a lifetime of horror and woe." As we all know, the definition of inevitable is "unable to be avoided, evaded, or escaped," which would have worked perfectly well in Snicket's narrative.

Guilty pleasure.

Desolation Jones is a fascinating character and this just screams to be made into a movie. There's hitler porn, failed CIA experiments, high tech gadgets, badass detectives, almost gratuitous violence, terror, and even a surprising amount of tenderness. I eagerly await part 2 in the Fall.

The best book I have ever read, and continue to read often. It you have an interest in restoring, growing or discovering your wonder, this is the book. Murchie is a modern day Leonardo, who has mastered so many pursuits it's astonishing. The first half of the book is an exhaustive description of the natural world and how everything works from trees to individual cells, the life of dunes, to 26 human senses (not just 5). These things are described in ways that are revelatory...such new and excellent ways of explaining things we take for granted, and things we have never contemplated. Then the second half is dedicated to 7 mysterious principles like Transcendance, Interconnectedness, the Omnipresence of Life, Life's analogies on Land, Sea and Sky, Living geometry and order, the polarity principle, the germination of worlds, and divinity. You can open the book anywhere and become fascinated in seconds. He is a scientist who writes with the heart of a poet, so even when he is describing an intricate biological function, I find myself smiling and completely engrossed. Especially great for writers, both as inspiration and reference.

I enjoyed the suspense and trying to figure out the ending. I was slightly disappointed when I did find out the whole plot. Overall it was an enjoyable experience.

I picked up this book because it seemed like an interesting book, and it didn't disappoint. It's about a boy, Augusten, who is born into a highly disfunctional family. After his parents divorce, his mother eventually gives him over to her shrink which places Augusten in a "family" which may be more disfunctional than his own.

Loved this book despite the slow start. Very deep, intellectual, and thoughtful. I'd recommend anybody looking to delve deep into the art world (visual, musical, or literary) read this book. My favorite quotes: “You should make the world pretty, Asher,” my mother whispered, leaning toward me. I could smell her breath. “I don’t like the world, Mama. It’s not pretty. I won’t draw it pretty.” “Then help me with the brushes,” he said. “A Jew should not only talk, he should also do.” Sometimes I think the Master of the Universe has another world to take care of, and He neglects this world, God forbid. To touch a person’s heart, you must see a person’s face. One cannot reach a soul through a telephone.” “So life would be precious, Asher. Something that is yours forever is never precious.” I stared at my reflection in the train window. Come, journey with me through the centuries, my eyes said. One learns to walk decades.

This is a book for people who have seen Night Of The Living Dead. Last time I checked, that was everyone on earth but me. Yup, yet another shameful facet of my colossal cultural illiteracy. I don't have anything against zombies -- although I do feel better when they're not around -- and I'm sure I'll see the movie someday. I don't hate movies either, I just don't put as much time into movie watching as ... everyone else on earth. But enough about me! Let's talk about you! You've seen NOTLD, right? You probably understand all these references to hiding inside clocks and endlessly nailing wood over doors and smoking dope with strange men. I bet they will make this book awesome for you! Please read it and review it for me, and in your review describe the connection for those of us on planet Ignoramus. Thing is, I thought the whole assholes-instead-of-zombies idea was comic geeeeeeenius. Yes, there's a lot of comic mileage gotten out of it. And while Kevin Donihe probably desires to be taken more seriously, I love his sense of humor. But as the book progresses it gets severely shackled to the concept of Assholes Replace Zombies In Close Retelling Of Famous Horror Film Well Known To Everyone On Earth Except Mykle Hansen. What's maybe more interesting from a literary point of view is that it's told very internally, from the mind and heart of Barbara instead of from a camera POV. And maybe what Kevin is trying to do here is make fun of some things about the movie that really don't hold water if you have characters that actually think. So many movies have that problem. But then again i could be totally wrong about this because I NEVER SAW THE MOVIE aaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrr ..... So I am exactly the wrong person to review this book. I recuse myself. Please don't read this. Or this. No really, stop reading now! You're not doing yourself any favors, or Kevin Donihe netiher. Hey, I said go away! Don't make me make you all uncomfortable. Go! Go read someone else's review. There are no stars here anyway! No stars for books by my friends, that's the rule. Sorry, Super Mario. But when I do finally watch NOTLD, I'll come back here and try to clean up this mess.
