I liked this. It was exciting and I liked the characters and wanted to see them work it out. Tony was a little slow on the uptake, but then again maybe he doesn't read as many murder mysteries as I do. I'm glad there is a sequel, because the relationship was not resolved, and I need it to be.

Sie kommt nach Paris, um ihren Traum zu erfüllen und trifft auf den gelangweilten Milliardär Derek, der eine kleine Sinnkrise durchmacht und in Manon das perfekte "Projekt" entdeckt. Er will ein Leben zerstören. Ein Jahr später ist Manon ein Superstar, gefragtes Model, ihre Fotos auf Werbetägern in jeder Stadt, in die sie kommt, die Menschen reissen sich um sie. Aber irgendwas scheint nicht zu stimmen, warum erkennt sie der Top-Regisseur nicht mehr, mit dem sie gerade zusammen gearbeitet hatte? Und George Clooney benimmt sich auch so eigenartig. Und Kurt Cobaine hat seinen Tod nur vorgetäuscht? Und warum erkennt sie dieser Türsteher nicht? Sie, den Superstar! Manon befindet sich in einer Welt aus Drogen und Oberflächlichkeiten, ihre Beziehung zu Derek ist auch eher enttäuschend. Eines Tages wacht Manon benommen auf und alles scheint nur ein Traum gewesen zu sein, oder doch nicht? Mir hat das Buch sehr gut gefallen, bis auf das Ende, das Ende nach dem Ende. DIe Welt des schönen Scheins und die Macht des Geldes werden extrem auf die Spitze getrieben und heraus kommt eine Geschichte, die den Leser mit der Frage zurücklässt, ob nicht vieles in der "Glitzerwelt" und im normalen Leben nur "bubblegum" ist, eine Blase, die ganz schnell platzen kann. Die Sprache ist direkt und ehrlich, was gut zur Geschichte passt, vielleicht aber nicht jerdermanns Sache ist. Auch wenn ich mit dem Ende so meine Schwierigkeiten habe (ich will's natürlich nicht verraten!), hat mich das Buch gut underhalten. Die Charaktere sind dunkel und nicht leicht zu mögen, und trotzdem gibt es immer wieder Momente, in denen man ihre Verletzbarkeit erkennt. Man fiebert mit und fragt sich, was genau Derek vorhat.

An excellent study on the life of Lee that highlights his character, and shows why Lee has such enduring appeal and devotion. This would be an eminently appropriate book for anyone, beginning in high school. It is factually accurate and relies heavily on Freeman. There is no doubt that Lee was a great man, which explains in some measure the iconoclastic works we are beginning to see. While this book may seem like hero worship, an objective examination of this gentlemen will show that he is indeed worthy of our admiration. We should all attempt to emulate Robert E. Lee and his devotion to duty.

Dickens' last full novel, and his best in my opinion. Will the aristocratic Eugene seduce the noble working-class Lizzie, or repent? Will Lizzie's obsessed schoolmaster suitor come to a bad end that reflects the 1860s fad for detective stories and sensational crimes? Will the headstrong Bella eventually repent of her obsession with marrying money? Will everyone good wind up married and/or rich anyway? Will the scenes in the taxidermist's shop be creepy, but in a really genial way? It's Dickens, so you know the answers, but it's 900 pages of fun anyway. Be sure to get a version with decent footnotes.

I'm hardly what you would call a sports fan, but I thoroughly enjoyed Zirin's book. It provides an ingenious perspective on the intersection of politics and sports in the United States. Very good reading.
