Just finished The Castle of Llyr this morning. I would give it 3*. It was fine, but definitely a children's book. The writing and the action were even a little too tame to be called YA I think. I guess I an spoiled after getting so involved the the sophisticated style of other series such as Dragon Prince by Melanie Rawn and A Game of Thrones byGeorge R.R. Martin. THe main thing I didn't like were the many times when the plot could have gone more in depth but all of the sudden "when they returned to the castle" and there was no explanation of how they got there etc. I will probably finish the other 2 books in the series in the future.

Take-no-prisoners political commentary from the former television actor that I like to think of as "the poor man's Bruce Willis." Great insights into the economic meltdown and the shady underpinnings of the big corporate bailouts. Also, some interesting criticism of Obama, and a look at the way the American media often ignores important news stories in favor of reporting puff pieces on celebrities and other non-issues. Doyle is especially good at giving readers a general idea of the political corruption currently rampant throughout both parties in our nation's government.

My review of Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan is based on a paperback copy of the book that I purchased for myself. The following review is my honest opinion. When I saw the trailer for the movie based on this book I knew that it was going to be something I wanted to read and immediately added it to my wish-list. I was so psyched when I found a pristine copy of this book, despite it being the movie cover and not the original, at my library's bag of books for a dollar sale. This story was startlingly true to young adult life. At least the way that I had always imagined it to be. Everything that happened in this story could realistically happen just likely wouldn't. One of my favorite aspects of the story was that it was like the snowball effect where one thing led to another, that led to dozens of others, all the while rushing down the mountain at crazed speeds. N&N bring new meaning to everything happens for a reason. I loved the voice of Norah; I saw so much of myself in her, both the me I am now and the me I was when I was actually the same age as her. The constant questioning of myself, the sarcasm to hide everything, always being the careful one who took care of those around me. Norah was me, or I was Norah. I loved reading her chapters. On the other hand I didn't like Nick's chapters quite as much...though whenever he included lyrics or the songs that were unfolding in his head as the soundtrack to the night I felt myself swooning just a little bit. All in all I think N&N was a fun, quick read and a great young adult contemporary novel. I'm giving Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist a four out of five stars review. Though I didn't find myself falling in love with the story I really did enjoy it and will probably have it making the rounds soon.

Último tomo que leo hasta nuevo aviso, no porque no me haya enganchado sino porque la persona que me los presta sólo tiene de corrido hasta acá :P Cuando encuentre el #10 seguro retome con ganas, porque este tomo deja con ganas de más. Si bien tiene algunos de los defectos del #09 y algunos personajes que me gustan hacen cosas que no me gustan para nada, el conjunto es muy interesante y sólido. Las muertes nuestras de cada tomo están a la orden del día y la sub-trama de los xinitos gana algo de fuerza, aunque sigo absolutamente perdido con las intenciones de estos personajes. Será un hasta luego, Ed y Cía, espero reencontrarlos saludables y de buen ánimo.

Not as good, as I had hoped. I love the premise; magic and the archives, alchemy, witches, but the romance is just blah. I'm not much into SAPPY supernatural romance. The historical connections are cool and I love that Diana is a rare book researcher. I prefer the brutal love affairs of the Mayfair witches.
