This book is a must read from anyone who has been diagnosed as bipolar, who identifies with the bipolar neurodiversity, or who interacts with people with the label. It's an amazing anthology of people, many of radical backgrounds, experiencing, questioning, living with, accepting, etc the bipolar situations they find themselves in. It does no take a hardline stance on medication, diagnosis, illness, or transcendence. It's just awesome.

A classic of the 20th Century. One you should read before you die, but only when you're ready to shut yourself off from the world for many days. Flawed, yes, and perhaps too long-winded at times (reduced by a third it would have been perfect) but this is an important, mind-expanding trilogy that you can absolutely lose yourself in. It shows you what a novel can achieve and it opened the door for so many great writers, such as John Irving and Salman Rushdie, etc etc

An interesting end-of-the-world book. A satisfying read, though the ending was a bit fast.

Wow. Duncan has an incredible prose style. Multiple Pages written about something simple like sky or a scene out of a window. The whole thing is a really great narrative of human life as it is now in the modern age. The only thing that kept me from giving it give stars was that I though it lost its direction for about 40 pages. Just description and imagery without a lot of anything really happening. But those pages were still great to read.

I didn't find this book to be riveting in the writing style - it can be rather dry and there are parts that drag on a bit. But it is a fascinating true story about identical twin boys who, because of a circumcision gone horribly wrong, are raised as brother and sister. The ego of Dr. John Money is infuriating and it is frustrating just how he managed to get all these cases of sex reassignment. I find it baffling that all these parents would let their children have these yearly therapy sessions with this nut without oversight, especially when the children were all vocal about not wanting to go and would get more nervous about meeting with the man as they grew older. People - listen to your children!!! They are the experts of themselves! There are just two other parts that I have to write about. The first is that there seems to be confusion on the part of the author in the difference between gender identity (the gender you perceive yourself to be) and sexual orientation (the gender you are sexually attracted to). The author doesn't seem to understand that these two things are not related. The other thing I want to comment on is the underlying belief that all these children have to suffer the taunting of their school peers. Children do NOT have to suffer this kind of cruelty! Do whatever you have to do to keep your children home if society cannot accept them for who they are. Let them develop their sense of self without cruel children telling them they are a freak. I came away from this book with a strong belief that intersexed children should remain as they were born until they decide that they want to do something about it. But they need the full support of their parents to be able to develop into who they are meant to be without the taunting and teasing of people who think everyone must be the same (well, they can be a boy or a girl, but beyond that the girls all must be the same and the boys must all be the same). I also came away with a slight fear of "experts". There is something to be said for people who have humility and a more fluid viewpoint. Who can consider actual circumstances rather than always have the "right" answer before even being presented with the case. While this isn't a parenting book, I chose to place in on my parenting shelf because I feel that it is an important book for parents.

I can safely say, this book has changed my life. Specifically, it has changed the way I look at the Israel/Palestine conflict, the way I look at the Bible, and the way I think about politics. Beware, suffice to say it is not a typical pro-Israel point of view, but solidly biblical.

Despite what Mishima might have you believe in the preface, 'My Mother' is the key work here. Highly recommended for a good read to fans of Genet, H Miller, Nin, Breton, Proust, Cendrars (actually pretty much everyone born or relocated to France in the first half of the 20th century), and (obviously) quite interesting to folks with an interest in phil/psych/gender studies etc through the lens of Sade, Freud, Foucault, etc. I enjoyed this more deeply than Story of the Eye, it has greater character development (and more likeable characters) and is possible to grow attached to the characters so that it is much more crushing when things unfold and get fucked up.

What would it be like if Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, and James Joyce were four struggling cartoonists living in Paris? Add to that idea a scheme for them to get rich in an afternoon and you have The Left Bank Gang by Norwegian artist/writer Jason. Did I mention this is a graphic novel and everyone is drawn as animals? The Left Bank Gang is a funny, smart, and imaginative interpretation of writers associated with the Lost Generation. It's an engaging, slim volume that blends literary legends with Reservoir Dogs, though with far less violence. If you're going to pull off a crime, it never hurts to have Hemingway backing you up.
