I can see why she won the Pulitzer, but it wasn't my personal favorite. I am not a big short story fan as it is, and these stories were just sad and bleak until the last one (which I really liked). I was depressed. Apparently Indians can never have a healthy marriage or relationship of any kind? That being said, I did keep reading, so it had to be compelling on some level, right? So beautifully written and interesting, just not my style.

In part two of this trilogy, you definitely get a fair share military history. I've always been a Civil War buff, and this book satisfies. Relationships on the home front continue to be developed. Jakes throws a lot of characters at you, both fictional and historical. You have to keep up.

I haven't read a book about the Beatles for awhile and decided I'd like to see what's out there. My local library is small and didn't have much. Then I found this book and felt that I'd hit the jackpot. I've always been intrigued by the whole Pattie/George/Eric triangle. What a great way to hear about it from Pattie herself. I think she's a brilliant writer. I'm 3/4 of the way through and it's been one of those books that I just can't put down. In fact I could have had it read by now, but I'm delaying it, savoring it, because I don't want it to end. It's been so interesting to learn about Pattie herself and her upbringing. I've never known much about her, just her name and I know I've seen a few pictures of her with the Beatles. My husband's not much of a book reader, but as I've told him a bit about what I'm reading, he's wanted to learn more and I've been reading it to him. I think it's great that she's so honest about everything she went through and remembers. It's been quite a ride. I admire her and think she's a beautiful person inside and out. My heart ached for her as I read about her heartaches. I'm so happy that I came across this book. If you want to know the story of Pattie, George and Eric, why look anywhere else? If you love learning about the Beatles lives, this is a great book to turn to as well. Well done Pattie, for having the courage and strength to write this! Even though I'm not quite finished reading it, it's been one of the best books I've read in a long time. Yours is a story that has deeply touched me.

This was edited together from two of her drafts, and Pym apparently never considered it ready for publication. It should have stayed buried, as it is the worst Pym I have ever read. What sets Pym, like Austen, apart from her contemporaries is not just the razor-sharp social commentary and witty phrasing, but also the underlying sympathy. Even when she has torn a hole through hypocrisies, there is still an understanding of *how* those betrayals came about. This story has found many clever ways to cut deeply into the consciousnesses of academics, but instead of empathy there is only cruelty. There is not a single sympathetic character in the whole novel, and it put me in a bad mood.

This was a great read, very educational and articulated some key things about food choices and impact on the environment that I had thought, but didn't know how to say. I would recommend this to everyone, and I plan to start visiting my farmers market more often!

Using statistics and illustrative interviews, Wilson presents a clear-sighted assessment of the class he designates the urban poor. He expertly balances multiple strands - joblessness, welfare, discrimination, family unity, public education, drug use, motivation, social bonds - in painting a picture of "ghetto" reality. The result is grim and the solutions he presents in the last sections of the book are even further off today than when this book was published well over a decade ago, but the book is less a sentimental paean to the working poor than it is a tool crucial to understanding domestic policy and its implications on urban life. Despite some reservations about the concluding chapters, highly recommended.

I actually finished this novel, much to my shame. It wasn't that compelling of a read, and the stories kept jumping around. But I finished it simply to see to what EXACT LEVEL OF HERESY IT WOULD SINK. And it went about as far as it could go. Reading it this close to Easter makes it even more despicable. I finished it while teaching one day and drove immediately to the library to get it out of my possession.
