This took me like 2 years to get through. It was good background for Mists, but didn't really keep me totally engaged. It was hard to get into three separate stories, especially when they were essentially the same one three times over. Wasn't bad, but didn't knock my socks off the way Mists did.

George Saunders has a great absurdist sensibility and an appreciation for the plight of the underdog. Well, not even the underdog -- the loser among losers. The guy who always gets the short end of the stick, and it isn't even a very long stick to begin with. Saunders takes this sad sack and makes us feel for him, laugh at and with him, and appreciate his pathos and (occasionally) his heroism. There are comic moments in the title story of this collection to rival Heller or Vonnegut.

She feels like there's a connection and as if second guessing herself wasn't hard enough she then finds herself being drafted to be a bride for an alien race. Baird is a beast kindred. He's a huge alien warrior who recently escaped imprisionment with the strength and longing to be with the one he's destined for, Olivia Waterhouse. They've shared their minds and connected so he knows that no other in the universe is for him, but her and he's determined to make her his bride. Liv is reluctant to his advances and tries to distance herself from the unknown. She convinces herself that she's better off returning to earth, her sister and her career. Her mind tells her one thing, while her heart says another. He worships her and pledge's his undying devotion and love, but it takes a dangerous enemy and an almost near death encounter before Liv finally realizes that love is worth the fight to face her fears, and Baird is the answer to her happiness. This novel hooked me right from the beginning. It has a unique plotline with many unsuspecting twists that intrigued me to want to know what happens next. The bonds between Baird and Olivia are what every woman longs for, and the seduction scenes are really sizzling. I would definately recommend this read, and can honestly say that I'm looking forward to reading the sequel.

Book #66 of 2009 I really enjoyed this book. Both Astrid and Veronika have to learn to live again after the losses in their lives have left them feeling numb. They form a friendship that probably couldn't be formed if they hadn't experienced those losses and each teaches the other to embrace life once more. I enjoyed this book for its simplicity and also its message. Astrid and Veronika take walks together, drink wine, cook dinner, make jam. They slowly tell each other their sorrows and I think the telling makes the buren they carry lighter. A good read.

I have so enjoyed reading these books. I started when I was 18 and have been gradually working my way through them over the years. I love his writing, the way he gets the truths about life, love, friendship and social interactions so spot on. I don't mind the sentences that go on for pages - I find it very relaxing reading, since you have to accept that it's a long-term reading project, rather than something to skip through for the plot. I'm rather sad to have finished it. I shall probably start again from the beginning quite soon, though.

Beautiful, lyrical and offbeat. In Helprin's hands, nothing that happens, however small, is ordinary. On almost every page there is a sentence or phrase that just stops you cold with its beauty. My favorite stories are the title novella and The Schreuderspitze.

This book starts really, really slow. It actual took me several years to finish it, because I'd put it down and not pick it up again for 6 months, thus forgetting what was going on and needing to start over. However, once we get out of the young girl's story, things move along at a good pace. I'm not sure that narrative device adds much---or enough to justify the problems it causes the reader. Its makes the story about a girl and her mysterious parents. Do we actually care? A story about the conflict between a vampire hunter and an evil vampire is sufficient compelling, at least to me.
