Great early 20th century mystery stories. The copy of the book that I have has four short stories in them featuring the no-name detective from the Continental Agency in San Francisco. I enjoyed them, but I think Dashiell Hammett is a little better at longer works; there's just not enough space to really work out the stories. Interestingly, the last story in the book "The Farewell Murder," is roughly the plot of the third movie in The Thin Man series, "Another Thin Man."

Not one of her better books. Good complicated ending but lacks something.

One of the best opening lines ever: "When Gregor Samsa woke up one morning from unsettling dreams, he found himself changed in his bed into a monstrous vermin." (Stanley Corngold translation)

** spoiler alert ** I may be one of the only people to say this, but I didn't really enjoy this book. I loved the concept and for the first 100 pages or so I was hooked but after that point my interest started to drag. I thought there would be a bigger problem above time traveling. Also, Clare basically told the entire story in the first 150 pages, so you spend the remaining just re-living the story with more detail. The re-living did have a few surprises but they weren't big enough to keep me hooked and everything seemed anticlimactic since most of the details had been given away chapters away. By far though, the ending really ruined the book for me. You would expect Clare to be excited or full of some type of emotion at the thought of seeing henry again. Instead she seemed indifferent since she knows it already happened. It, seemed so disappointing to me.

I am on page 120 & this book is intriging. I can't believe it is the author's first novel. I know this far into the book that I will be a huge fan of Mr. Hirsch's. Excellent. Finished this book 2 months ago & I forgot to update my review. Absolutely a great book. Interesting, intriging & leaving me wanting to read more by Mr. Hirsch. I was almost sad when I finished it, as I enjoyed his writing style & storyline so much. Kudos to this new writer. I feel he is going to be famous!

wonderful. this novel takes you deep into igbo culture and nigerian culture as a while in the 30s/40s. you see the connection and conflict between the old and the new, the traditional and the foreign. you see the role that world war II played in nigeria, too. and she never gives easy or simple answers. emecheta writes the most thought-provoking addictive page-turners. also for westerners, this novel is a good exercise in walking in someone else's shoes.
