graaaahhhhhhh! why did i waste my time on this wretched thing?! those were precious hours of my life i will never get back. *gnashes teeth in self-regret and rage* this book reads like a mary-sue fanfic of the worst kind. lazy, lazy thinking; lazy, lazy writing. what did i gain from reading this book?! only a renewed hatred of the twilight series and the godawful blight that it has spawned. side note: do have to say, though, that this book becomes quite fun when read in conjunction with walter benjamin's classic essay "the work of art in the age of its technological reproducibility." julie kagawa is OBVIOUSLY trying to set up a marxist allegory about the failed revolutionary potential of technology (the iron king) to unite the proletarian masses (the iron fey) against the cannibalistic modes of capitalist production (the seelie/unseelie ruling system) that monopolize aura (glamour) in order to secure the existing fascist order (oberon/mab). you could rename this book "revenge of the aura." just sayin'. if you don't like creating tongue-in-cheek marxist readings but do like the whole "ordinary girl fights the fey in order to save the [family, friends, smokin' hot dudes, etc.] she loves" thing, here are some books that are infinitely better than this tiresome retread. **terry pratchett's tiffany aching series **margaret mahy's the changeover **marly youmans' curse of the raven mocker **emma bull's war for the oaks **delia sherman's changeling **patricia mckillip's the changeling sea and winter rose **probably robin mckinley has a bunch of books that would be appropriate to list here, could i be bothered to remember them all **ditto diana wynne jones (special shout-out to deep secret though) **would neil gaiman's coraline count? well, i'll list it here anyway because it is a good book. **charles de lint has a gajillion of these stories. i confess i stopped reading him a long time ago because after a while it got pretty monotonous, but he is still better than the alternative. **i will even include juliet marillier's heir to sevenwaters, as even THAT is better than the alternative. note to self: immediately stop reading any books where the phrase "i am not to be trifled with" is used unironically. i hereby declare this a DEALBREAKER!

Princess Academy was a quick read with an enjoyable storyline. It's perfect if you are looking for something that isn't so complicated.

This book is a gem. I recommend it to anyone who wants to write or who wants a deeper appreciation on what it takes to write a perfect sentence or paragraph etc.

Blech. I find this style of "imposter" nonfiction tasteless. In Nickel and Dimed, Ehrenreich pretends to be a minimum wage worker. She tricks and condescends to her coworkers in a variety of minimum wage jobs, and after she has tolerated enough (usually only a matter of weeks), pulls the rug out from under her new friends and confidants by admitting that, Surprise! She's really a comfortably middle-class author with health insurance and an advance, one would assume, for this book. Offensive and silly. Makes you feel for the people she leaves behind in the trenches.

Reading Kissinger's lies about the Vietnam War will be extremely useful to those of us who will seek an understanding of the lies that members of the current administration are telling and will continue to tell about the Iraq War. Nonetheless, I couldn't bear to give the book more than one star for a rating. Kissinger should be tried for war crimes and should go to jail for the rest of his life. Instead, he is advising the new President.

This novel, a Pulitzer winner, was gifted to me in December of 2006, but I finally got to read it now. It takes me a while to get into fiction, and this novel was no different, but you really get absorbed in Jones' story and storytelling. Set in antebellum Virginia, in fictional Manchester County (which was later "torn" and split up into all the neighboring counties), Jones really looks at slavery from a number of different lenses, including the paradox, irony, and terrible twists of fate in the little microcosm he decides to focus on (free African Americans who became slave owners in the south). It's pretty heavy reading, but really well worth it.

I really liked the way that this story unfolded. While it was written for young adult readers, I often find myself reading book to check for appropriateness in my classroom. This story is centered around a girl who goes to a party between her 8th and 9th grade year. At this party something horrific happens that she can't tell anyone about. As a result, she finds herself beginning high school friendless. As the story unwinds, we find out the "whole story" and we follow her throughout her journey to face the friends and problems that she feels like destroyed her.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I thought it would be stupid and fluffy like most self-help type books. However, it turned out to be laugh-out-loud-funny, while also serving as a good reminder of the stuff we forget sometimes-that life isn't about finding the perfect man, that your career shouldn't be the only thing you do, and that everyone is just as strange as you are. A VERY fast read and much funnier than it looks.
