A wonderful tale of the historical future empress in India, Nur Jahan - her youth, early marriage, and final ascension to empress and wife of Jahangir. I loved all the details about India, especially after having visited many of the sites described.

I was expecting more from a newberry winner. You gotta give the author extra points for a creative idea, but the story was by the numbers to me.

the more times i read this book, the better it gets. the evolution of alex's language is brilliant, and the end is heartwrenching. one of my favorite books i've ever read (5 times).

I'm reading this between other things. I like Lars' style and I really feel like I should be reading with notebook handy. Either that or it's just time to add a copy to the in-house library.

By the same author as "Anne of Green Gables." I like this series better. It's still about a girl who is orphaned, but she's a little less outgoing than Anne. Perhaps it helped me identify more.

Great book, like the first one. I am totally inspired by this story. I totally believe in overcoming poverty, ignorance, and extremism by educating women. Love it! Makes me want to do more good in the world.

I had the pleasure and privilege of reading many of these stories as they flew from Mr. Gifford’s ancient, spider-infested typewriter – at least, it’s easy to imagine him using such a contraption, though the truth be more mundane. It’s a delight to see what I consider “Classic P.S. Gifford” finally published in book form. With time, this collection will surely earn such status. From the eccentricity of “The Cucumber Man,” to the claustrophobic terror of “Long Memories,” you’ll find plenty of variety in setting, characterization, and plot. And twists? What would a P.S. Gifford story be without them? As for the squirm factor, “The Gastronome” so disturbed me that I couldn’t bring myself to read it a second time. Perhaps, among these forty-five tales, there lurks a story that will play on your own fears to such a degree. I’m honored as namesake to a couple of characters, and was pleasantly surprised my alter-egos made it into the book. If I were to tell you how much you’ll enjoy reading The Curious Accounts, the statement would obviously be biased. Instead, let me say this: if you imagine Edgar Allan Poe’s flair for the macabre paired with the playfulness of Roald Dahl, you’ll begin to envision the unique talent of P.S. Gifford.

I want to like Urusla K LeGuin. But this book was, simply put, bad. Boring story, slow moving plot when there was plot to speak of, and an anticlimactic, disappointing ending. Maybe I just wanted it to be Harry Potter.

Entertaining, and I learned some worthy tidbits for caffeine-fueled conversation (such as how the modern insurance industry was born in a dockside London coffeehouse).
