I was excited to read this book because the introduction said it wasn't a book based on the movie. The movie was based on this book. But after four chapters I finally had to stop - it was so dry. This isn't a novel at all. I thought it was going to be a novel because on the back it says "based on the extraordinary true story..." It was like reading a documentary. The style of the book was really choppy - with stories and then quotes. I was really disappointed because a novel based on these events (even if it used the direct quotes Tec received in her research) would be really interesting and intriguing. ------------------ "In an age when the term "hero" has been so overused as to become meaningless, the Bielskis remind us that real heroism is not the stuf of comic books. C'est un livre fantastiquement bien écrit, avec un histoire superbe, mais le sujet m'a rendu inconfortable (le pourquoi de seulement 3 étoiles). J'ai vraiment eu beaucoup de problèmes a lire tout le livre, parce que on nous dit due l'enfant va mourir, et la personne qui raconte, un autre enfant maintenant devenu vieillard, nous prépare pour quelque chose de vraiment horrible. Il nous prépare un peu trop à mon avis. A la fin, ce n'est pas aussi horrible qu'on se l'imagine et la fin du livre est plus relaxante qu'une grosse partie du livre.

I have no idea when I read this book. Some summer in college? I must have. I feel like I read it on some trip back from Baton Rouge... How fitting. I just remember that the film adaptation was perpetually on Dartmouth's movie station during my last quarter. I would always somehow tune in as Ashley Judd would mutter, "Get some shrimp for supper."

This one was great. I loved the story-telling and the way the mythology was woven into the story in a way that made it believable. The only downside was the slow opening. It took me a chapter or two to understand where it was all headed. It felt like a little too much exposition on the front end that could have been woven into the story. Other than that minor quibble, it was great. I highly recommend it.

I received this book as a free giveaway here on goodreads and had signed up for it because it looked like it'd be an entertaining, mindless read. Sure enough, I read most of it in the better part of a Sunday afternoon and was the perfect read paired with some coffee and music for a gloomy, windy day. The story resolves a bit predictably, albeit with a little bit of a twist, but was enjoyable enough to want to keep reading through without getting bored. "The Uncoupling" is a great choice for a beach or vacation read, enjoy!
