Tana French has done it again in her 2010 mystery novel set in Ireland, “Faithful Place.” As before, she employs a first-person narrator, but this one is new, Frances Mackey. The twists and turns of this compelling story include an undercover cop, two dysfunctional families struggling in the slums of Dublin, a 22-year-old mysterious disappearance turned death and a seemingly related current mysterious death. And this is not all, but I don’t want to spoil the compelling story. French has a knack for intriguing character development going far beyond most whodunit mysteries. I agree with the author of the book jacket blurb: “Her in-depth character development, combined with her willingness to put her heroes into richly drawn complex worlds, make French’s novels not merely whodunits, but brilliant and satisfying stories about memory, identity, loss, and what defines us as humans.” I’m looking forward to her next book and hope serious filmmakers have their eyes on French’s material.

This book started out really strong with a lot of great plot twists. Unfortunately, the ending left a lot to be desired.

A collection of sixteen stories upon which famous science fiction movies were based. The stories are usually (but not always) better than the films they spawned. This book includes Zelazny's classic "Damnation Alley," Clarke's "Sentinel" (which became 2001), Longyear's "Enemy Mine," R.F. Nelson's "Eight O'Clock in the Morning" (filmed by Carpenter as "They Live"), as well as my favorite two sf classic stories ever filmed, The Day the Earth Stood Still (from "Farewell to the Master" by Harry Bates) and This Island Earth (from the story by Raymond F. Jones). Grab the popcorn!

Love this book!!!! Smith, the bestselling author of the Jane Austen series (contemporary faith fiction novels based on Austen's books) works hard to show how Austen's themes parallel scriptural imperatives about love, particularly 1 Corinthians 13:4–8. The result is a compilation of recapped scenes from Austen novels with Smith drawing strong moral lessons for the reader. "Love is patient" is shown by George Knightley's patience for Emma Woodhouse in Emma; "Love is kind" through Fanny Price's treatment of others in Mansfield Park. Plenty of excerpts from Smith's own series and victorious triumphs from her personal life also help illustrate her points. Smith becomes almost gushy at times ("I adore the movie rendition of this scene") and the writing tends to ramble, including a three-page anecdote about her family's trip to Mt. Rushmore. Some of the comparisons are forced: "Fanny is merciful, just as her heavenly Father is merciful"; "Just as Lynda drew boundaries with Dora, we need to learn that living Christ is a gutsy undertaking."

I couldn't recommend Zora Neale Hurston enough. When she does fall short of her immense ability, she still offers much more than the usual writer. I would suggest finding her memoirs and folklore collection, too, as it will provide greater insight into her entire work. Start with Their Eyes Were Watching God and read several of her tightly written stories. Savor the dialogue and play, enjoy the setting of rural Florida. Move on to her lesser works with an eye for her development as an artist and what she does achieve, rather than how she fails. It's worth it. Highlights: Their Eyes, "Sweat," "Gilded Six-bits," and really most of the stories. Seraph requires patience, critically and narratively, but yields great reward.

I first read this book in the middle of the Salvation Army when I was 12 and recently re-read it. Boy it has A LOT going on, and honestly, I prefer the simplified film storyline. Maybe I've just been brainwashed by the movie (a personal favorite), but I'd forgotten that the shark is almost an afterthought on the written page. Instead, we're forced to concentrate on racial tensions (Brody is black and his wife is a spoiled white socialite), adultery, and a bunch of other, dare I say, crap. Still, I have a soft spot in my heart for Jaws (the book, the movie, yes, even the video game), so I can't give it less than three stars.

I picked this up because I just had to know how well zombies would meld with the prim and proper world of Jane Austin. It actually works quite well. I’m a fan of Pride and Prejudice and was worried that the addition of zombies would detract from the quality of the original novel. With the exception of a few minor parts, the story still flows well and still maintains its original eloquence. I know, eloquence and zombies don’t seem like two words that go well together, but I guess I just have a twisted mind. Darcy and Elizabeth’s witty humor still shine through, and the addition of zombies adds a level of excitement that helps the slower parts of the book move more swiftly. I especially liked the demise of Charlotte and Mr. Collins, as these were two of my least favorite characters. I’m amazed at how well the zombie outbreak fits right in. If you had never read Pride and Prejudice, you would think the story was meant to be written as it is here. It may be a bit more quirky (and perhaps morbid) of a love story than the original, but it worked for me.

Eh, unnerving but not terrifying. Maybe I just still have too much faith in humanity.
