This is a book about men. Lonely men. Working men. Good men. Imperfect men. Their talk (rough and gritty), hopes (working their own land), recreation (horseshoes, cards and whoring), dreams (freedom from wandering), character (each with strengths and weaknesses, thrown together) work (farming and ranching), challenges (lack of family/ relationship), and failings (the dark anger that lurks under the surface of even the innocent and seemingly gentle man). There is but one character that is a woman (she referred to as "Curly's wife"), and there is the whore house of unnamed 'girls'. Such is the setting for Steinbeck's spartan novel. A short book that leaves you twisted up. Don't let Steinbeck's brevity fool you, this story will stick. The fantastic writing draws you into the setting, and sets in slow motion a tragedy that unravels in 3 days. You know it is coming, but you cannot turn away. The feeling of inevitable demise carries you along through the sentences, paragraphs and chapters, until it is done. Over. And you are left with the lump in the stomach, pondering a world that is broken and in need of true hope. This passage from Ecclesiastes 7 comes to mind, "2 It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting, for this is the end of all mankind, and the living will lay it to heart. 3 Sorrow is better than laughter, for by sadness of face the heart is made glad. 4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth." I suppose it is a wise book. Certainly a work that deserves to bear the name, "classic". But it is a difficult read that ends without hope, and honestly (fool that I my be), I prefer to be inspired instead of warned.

در عجبم که ملت از چه چیز این کتاب تهی خوششان آمده؟ کل داستان عبارت است از اینکه یک آدم داغدیده عقده ای، برای اینکه مردم به یقین برسد که همه ذاتشان پلید است، به مردم ده پول می دهد تا یک پیرزن بی خاصیت را بکشند. بعد مردم ده ثابت می کنند که آدمهای قاتلی هستند، ولی یک دختر بی حیایی این وسط باعث می شود مرد متحول شود و کلی مال و منال بدهد به آن دختر! مثلا این داستانی است درباره بشریت و ذات انسان و از این مباحث. راستش با خواندن این کتاب، کلا از اسم کوئلیو گریزان شدم

This was a great read and I loved the MCs Raine and Ash. I hate stories about prisons and abuse normally and I kept hoping they would escape and out of the city and I thought the ending was well done. This seems to be the start of a series and I will definately buy the next one.

The popularity of this book was one of the reasons I wanted to read it, to see if it was as good as it had been reviewed. I would have to say it did live up to the reviews. I found it very intriguing and hard to put down. I just wanted to keep reading one more page so I could see what happened to Katniss. I now can't wait to read Catching Fire and Mockingjay.

If I could adequately write a review about how much I think about this author, I'd be a writer! She really knows how to pull you into a story and keep your interest...so much so that I'm sure I will read her other book soon! Still Missing will not be forgotten. Some parts were difficult to read and brought every woman's fears to surface. The very last sentence was a real surprise and made me cover my open mouth and hold my breath for a brief second. A very good, fast page-turner.
