** spoiler alert ** Was I supposed to love this book? On some levels I enjoyed it (I always enjoy a good period piece, especially one from early 20th c.). But on many other levels it was annoying. There was something childish about how the latter half of the narrative played out. Events occur and they seem to have no real bearing on each other and at one point I got particularly annoyed when the main character leaves a woman waiting for him. He doesn't mention her again for years! Also, the whole life's work of searching for his parents who had stood up against the opium trade is kind of pathetic in a way. It's like a little kid who spends his whole afternoon searching for his parents in the mall after he has been separated from them. He dreams up these elaborate reasons as to why they have been taken from him when really they were caught up in their own drama that has almost nothing to do with him. And he decides to become a detective so that he can solve the case, just like a kid would. When he grows up he's called the famous detective, just like a kid would imagine his adulthood. Unfortunately, in the case of this book it's a grown man, not a kid, but he barely acts like one. It's no wonder he never has a lasting relationship with a woman either. And the ending is exactly how a mama's boy would want it to end. If you want this book, it's yours.

Generally, a decent contemporary novel... the psychedlic, whacked-out bits were too much for me to handle, but the escape from Greece was my favourite part of the book. The ending... well, I can't share any spoilers if the ending spoiled the experience for me.

This was a teenage favourite of mine, that I re-read towards the end of last year. It's a frank account of addiction, the highs and the lows, with no details spared (save Burrough's killing his common-law wife, which doesn't get a mention). I like the Raymond Chandler feel to it, and the bare prose. I also like the fact that the story meanders from place to place with the protagonist, and never really reaches a satisfactory conclusion. It's not a story, after all, it's an account, and Burrough's addiction continued. Spurred on by his association with the beats, I tried to read On The Road a view years back, but I really didn't take to it. Naked Lunch was a bit of a trial too!

Very interesting and well written memoir. The period after the war wasn't as interesting to me, but I saw how it was necessary to bring the book to its conclusion.

** spoiler alert ** It's a so-so kind of book. The story is not what I expected it to be and I don't know if that's a good thing. I hate the ending. I read it because first of all, it is PC's book. Secondly, I got intrigued by the summary-the soul mate thingy. Many parts of the book were boring and nonsensical(?) (dunno if that's the right term to use). The story is the only thing I like in the book. I really like the first half of the book especially the first few pages. I started to get bored in the second part, the 'Winter and Spring'. But some parts are still okay, what I mean is it is not as good as the first part. Also the story in second half is a bit fast. I hate the ending. In my opinion it would be a lot better if Brida end up with her Soul mate, I mean the Magus. She even chose him but the Magus let her go. I really hate that. I really got disappointed in that part. For me that's the worst.

some minor mistakes in the writing, but the detail is fantastic. wasn`t the easiest read, a lot of people to keep track of.
