I have had this book on my shelf of "to read" books for several years. When Oprah chose it as her Book Club selection, I decided it was time to give it my attention. While I respect Sidney Poitier as a man and he has many fine qualities, I felt the book wasn't as strong as I had hoped it would be.

Beautifully written plays that are sometimes a bit ramble-y but always powerful. This collection includes some of his best, like A Dance of the Forests and . While some of his writing is a bit difficult to digest, Soyinka is one of the strongest playwrights I've ever read.

A quick read. I kept turning the pages and wondering what will happen next? A great book for almost any age.

I loved the character development in this novel. The characters grow and change, and they aren't always predictable. Brave characters have moments of weakness; selfish ones show unexpected kindness. Lina's mother is definitely the heroine of this story. She's the best mother, sacrificing everything for her children, encouraging them in the worst of situations. Her compassion towards strangers and even her enemies is inspiring without being nauseating. I could barely read the last fifty pages through my tears. So much of this story is heartbreaking, but definitely worth the read. I absolutely loved this novel.

I had always thought that this was a goofy and not very informative book. But when I started reading this, I realized that although it's written in a story-form way and apparently for those who have no background knowledge on philosophy, the book is quite informative and interesting at the same time. This is a type on book that when you start reading it, you hardly can put it down.

This book is a history of the politics of American media in the United States since roughly 1980, but with discursions far earlier, and ramifications deep into the future. It doesn't just paint a bleak picture; it describes those citizens and activists who have been working to improve things, and inspires readers to act. The one complaint about this book is that it doesn't delve deeply enough into the issue; as someone who has worked very deeply on these issues, and as someone who personally knows many of the players mentioned in the book, there is a lot that this book missed. But that's understandable; the book is only about 300 pages long, and that's not enough to cover everything. Nevertheless, it tells plenty, and certainly helps tells the stories that badly need telling.
