Everyone is an imbecile in this satire of beauracracy. It reads a lot like a protracted Mad Hatter's Tea Party from Alice in Wonderland. I found the lack of any depiction of any foil of reason undermines realism and the value of the book as a social commentary. Lots of slapstick and lampoonery, here. For some reason, I kept being reminded of The Fountainhead. Both of these books are one-sided and very heavy handed, but while The Fountainhead inspires so much vitriol, this book seems to be widely looked upon fondly. I'll chock it up to jokes.

this started off well, but dragged in the middle. I loved the characters and imagery, and the way fairy-tale themes were incorporated in a subtle way. but it was still a bit of a struggle to finish.

Work book. I have to read about breast and other cancers right now at work. This one is okay thus far. Man, we've come a long way, baby with breast cancer treatment. Some of the treatments, even in the 60's, were barbaric.

Well-researched, well-written, but also pretty depressing! Quite enlightening regarding the various industries that contribute to the fast food industry and culture. (perhaps my favorite was the chapter on "flavorists" and all the ways fast food fools you with flavor and scents that aren't actually in the food) I can't say it's turned me off from eating fast food forever, but it's certainly made me think twice about our current structure of the beef and chicken industries. I read this on vacation, which probably isn't for everyone. It's definitely a book that I probably would've read back in college for class - more informative than entertainment.

I have read many books based on the Arthurian legend, including the source, but that came later. As a lttle girl this was my first reading of the tale and it blew my mind. Unlike many of my other childhood favorites, when I reread it as an adult it had lost none of its magic. A true classic. I highly recommend it!

Loved it. Gave me a glimpse into the last days of the lives of the Romanov family. After reading it, I had to google the family to read more about them.
The humor wears a little thin after a while, but I learned some interesting facts. The side trips into family life are either fun or not, but the scenes with his father are the best. On the whole an enjoyable beach read.

I know its a "young adult book" but I had such a good time breezing through it and feeling like I was back in high school again.

A thorough if sometimes tedious book about medieval Europe. Cantor's scholarship is sound. His writing is accessible but not the easy-to-digest style he perfects in such later book as "In the Wake of the Plague" and "Antiquity." I have two complaints. First, there are no maps or photos of any kind and the book suffers because of it. Modern maps do not represent the heavily forested, mostly rural Europe of the Middle Ages. Photos of the documents produced by monks in the scriptoria would have been appreciated. Likewise, I wanted to see the coins, the sacred structures and the iconography described at length by Cantor. The lack of any graphics renders this book incomplete. Second, and this is a minor complaint, Cantor occasionally gets lazy with his pronoun usage. I found myself having to re-read certain sentences several times to decipher who "he" was. If you are a college student and you need to write a paper on some aspect of the Middle Ages, this is the book for you (but be prepared to get your maps somewhere else.)
