I could relate a lot to this book, for I am also American Born Chinese. The book contains three stories that follow three different characters, however the stories intertwine in the end.

This book had a lot of comedy and snark (I closest see her style to that of author Dakota Cassidy), but where this book goes horribly wrong is the crash landing that is the last 1/4 of book. Excessive twists of plot, bizaare behavior, and a heroine that is apparently going to coast through life being immature and annoying at best - though a great cook and snarky & funny gal. I appreciated that this was a book about romance in Alaska, and that the werewolf stuff was not front and center. (no long descriptions or back story... no in-depth to rules and such)

Good read. Not the best I've seen from Alexander McCall Smith, one of my favorite authors, but it's the first of a new series so maybe they'll get better as all the characters become more developed. Still his usual funny, warm and clever style.

I liked this book, not for mysteries that Mma Ramotswe has to solve, because really her cases aren't very complicated at all, but for the portrayal of life in Botswana. As Mma Ramotswe tells the reader her life story and solves her cases the reader is taken on a journey into the Kalahari, into the mines of South Africa and made to understand the customs and way of life in Botswana.

I find as my reading tastes develops and matures (one would hope!) that I enjoy books that show more about the characters than just being a good story. In other words, I like books that make me think (but not too much...I'm still maturing!). This is one of those stories.

It's been quite some time since I read this one. To be honest, the ending simply ruined it for me. Otherwise, it would have gotten 2 stars at least, but I never really connected even with the "good" parts, and then it whammed me with a mega-depressing finale. Because the rest of it was so blah, I was counting on a grand finish to pull it through and make it worthwhile, so that ending really, really let me down. I also was just not interested in the plots going on parallel to Sonea's, in particular, her childhood friend. Mediocre series.
