I found the foot-binding process fascinating to read about; I had no idea how brutal it really was (I thought it was just wrapping them so they didn't grow). The story of the friends is heartwarming and heartbreaking... what a great read!

Long and arduous read. Discursive this and that...here's what I got from it: Cook coined the term “pediocularity” to describe the ability of early twentieth century marketers to see the world through a child’s eyes, as “once the child’s perspective was acknowledged, it was but a small step…in creating products…to appeal to it.” Pediocularity has its origins in the early twentieth century when advertisers tried to reel in mom, a new potential customer identified in part because of her access to disposable cash and to the decline of house servants. Advertisers hawked pre-made children’s clothes to these overworked middle-class mothers. Consequently, we see the development and use of age distinctive terms such as toddler, girl, and even adolescent. By the 1930s, advertisers bypass parents and target children in their own right. As a result, in this period in America, the child, in all of his/her phases, became a target for consumption. In addition, because they are targeted as consumers, Americans start to see their children in a new light. A child becomes, “a person with self-knowledge, desire, and growing social right to express that desire.” Parents start to cave in to child demands with alarming regularity because, as Cook suggested, parents begin to see their children as individuals with the right to buy and own property. This is a view that remains to this day. P.S. I'm not saying that he didn't raise good questions, he did...it's just that the book was difficult to understand.

Amazing book. An unusual style and way of phrasing things, but the starkness of the writing and the severity of the story/time period fit each other so perfectly that I had to keep reading.

This is a fun read about the fine art of cyber-stalking from an author who cleverly balances Chick and Lit. The protagonist is an IRS agent who likes what she sees in a guy's tax returns and becomes mildly obsessed, even using her nephew as a pawn to get near said auditee. I have been audited by the IRS (no change) and it was nowhere near as pleasant. I also liked Cochran's first book, Mean Season, when a friend who knows her brought it to my attention. (See, that was full disclosure, but I would have thoroughly enjoyed it anyway.)

Teen stars of Family Network's, Jenna and Jonah's How to be a Rock Star, Charlie Tracker (Jenna) and Fielding Withers (Jonah) are also an off-screen couple ... or are they? They're in every magazine and on every celebrity gossip website, holding hands, cosying up in restaurants but it's all one big publicity stunt. Charlie and Fielding's off-screen relationship is what sells the show (and the merchandise). At least it does until the whole thing is revealed and the two of them have to hide out until it all blows over. This is a cute, fun easy-to-read book. The plot may not be overly challenging and is somewhat reminiscent of a bunch of teen movies/TV shows but it is an enjoyable one. It's kind of behind-the-scenes- Hannah Montana (with less annoying characters) and I could very much see it being turned into a movie itself. At most points throughout the book it might be pretty much obvious where the plot is going but for me it was more about when the two characters would realise it. The book alternates narrators between the two main characters which worked really well because the reader gets to know them both and see both sides of the story. It did get a little confusing at times because essentially they both have three persona's - their on-screen character, their off-screen fake one and then their real selves. The confusion was part of the story though, as the two of them were pretty confused about who they were as well. Jenna and Jonah's Fauxmance is a coming-of-age, fame's not all it cracked up to be story with witty dialogue and a fun if not surprising plot.
I found this a really Class early years read. Dreamy and playfully illustrations, good use of repartition to aid learning, vary accessible to young children being about animals and also playful- everyone likes a bit of slapstick humour! I would recommend this book to everyone.

My favorite book ever. I think I've read it at least 10 times as well as listened to the audio books. This book was simply amazing. My friends think I'm a nutcase when I gush about how wonderful it was but I don't care. Not that it was perfect or anything. By the middle of the book it grew long and rambling, and sometimes I wondered if it would ever get to the point. But the story itself grabbed my imagination as nothing else has before or since. Amazing!

Interesting explanation of the tradeoffs between privacy and security - including debunking of conventional wisdom about the necessity of law enforcement tools such as wiretaps.

Good hard boiled sci-fi. A bit like William Gibson with more gunplay. The first chapter I found a bit tedious, and there was the odd entire-chapter-long sex scene, but the story ends up being a compelling mystery in a unique universe. Working on the sequel now.
