I had heard rave reports of The Elegance of the Hedgehog. Perhaps too many. My expectations were way too high. Truth be told, I struggled through the first half of this book. The characters were so unlikable and spouting pseudo-philosophical treatises. However, the book takes a major turn around page 75. The plot picks up, and I essentially raced through the second half of the book. Plus, this book is all about change and growth so you know that the characters improved quite a bit as well. All in all, I am not sad that I read this book, and I think it made a great book club choice. Thanks especially for Gigi's contributions all the way from Australia, and Carolyn's reminder that this is book is very French. Some of the major topics of discussion included: The meaning of art, life, and death Class and social status Hiding one's true self and stereotyping others The value of intelligence

"I wish I could remember now what I was thinking during those next two hours, because they were the last good hours I was going to have for a long time. But nobody ever tells you in advance when you should concentrate on the good times."

I received this book as a Goodreads First Reads book. I have mixed feelings about this. First, the story was slow to start moving. It was difficult for me to get in to at first. Once it got moving, I enjoyed it. More than I wanted to. Second, it is definitely a 'christian' novel. I haven't read a ton in this genre, and it is possible that this is common to 'christian' novels, but it came off as kind of preachy. The point was made early on that Dras was a christian who wasn't walking the talk. But by halfway in, I felt that this theme was beaten into me. If I wasn't a christian- and didn't feel obligated to keep going through this due to my first reads copy- I may not have finished it. This could potentially be a turn off for some (I know, it's probably just not their genre then, but still, it's good to have a head's up on this).Again, I enjoyed the story, it was more the way the 'christian' theme was repeated over and over again that annoyed me - the point could have been made, just as clearly, without going back to this over and over again. Last, the ending was totally unresolved. Smart on Mitchell's behalf, because now I want to know what happens. But do I want to know badly enough to deal with two more novels similar to this one? That remains to be seen...

Scientific take on vamps. Kinda faulty logic but not a bad book.

Some good stuff. A lot of this is covered in his other book and taught by Dave Ramsey. This edition was unfortunately just the workbook with CDs and not the full book.

+ Unexpected and unusual, yet entirely compelling events. - Some awkward and incorrect sentence constructions, but likely due to the narrator rather than the writer. + Setting and tone appeal to me, as does the journey...bleak as it all is. + Teen fans of this book may graduate to The Road. (Perhaps I'm enjoying the current market fixation on dystopias and apocalyptic tales too much. Keep them coming, publishers!)

This author kind of reminds me of Michael Crichton and Dan Brown, in that it's written like a screen play. I read this book and still got a C in my bioterrorism course. LAME.

This is not a book I will forget anytime soon. At first, its old-fashioned language and complex vocabulary put me off, but then the story itself drew me in, and the language took on its own rhythm and feel that made a lot of sense. It affected how I thought while I was reading it (do you ever find your brain imitating the way an author writes?). I have been mulling over many ideas since, about how we came to know what we know about nature and science, and how little we may know about historical conflicts when winners write the history books. It also seems amazing, in hindsight, to realize that people rose up in revolution without any way to communicate speedily or en masse -- just letters, newspaper ads, and messengers on foot. The ending was a surprise. I am eagerly awaiting Vol. 2 so I can find out what happens to Octavian.
