This was the first book by this author that I have had the chance to read. I am so glad that I did too. This book was wonderfully written. Hopes Falls is a dying town. After the collapse of the mine, the town basically evaporated. At least until Lacey hatches a plan to attempt to revitalize the area. Instead of focusing on mining, she felt their town would be better off focusing on lumber. However, after the mine collapse, there weren’t any men to do the work. So Lacey convinces Evie and Naomi to go along with a scheme to place an ad to hire husbands. Jake’s parents refuse to acknowledge that his older brother is dead. They prefer to let everyone believe that he is just in another state. Jake is not happy with this. So he abandons his responsibility at home and Jake heads out hot on the heels of Mr. Twyler. Jake is convinced that this elusive Mr. Twyler is responsible for the murder of his older brother, Edward. Jake hears rumors that Twyler had stopped off to play in a poker game. So Jake hops aboard a train in the hopes of locating him. I absolutely loved the characters. This author definitely has a great wit to her writing. The plot was great. This is the first book in a series and it promises to be a great series. I highly suggest this fun read. I received a galley copy of this book from the Publisher. This in no way influenced my review.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I think it would be a little boring for someone who doesn't really like Tolkien. But then again, people who don't like Tolkien should have their heads examined.
This book takes place in 2035 where a virus has made it impossible for anyone over 18 to get pregnant. Teenage girls have come the most important people on the planet, they literally carry on the human race. “Bumping” has become a way for teenagers to basically sell their bodies to the highest bidder, and then give the child away. I really looked forward to reading this book. First of all, every sentence had some weird, made-up words in it. I tried to get into that, but it was just annoying, I moved on from that. I was also bothered by the fact that selling their body was made so glamorous, and was pushed on the children by their parents. I realize this was a satire, but I just couldn't get on board with a lot of this book.

I love this book. I find it oddly comforting.

Bought this because I was 20 pages from finishing Neuromancer, and it looked like the least hateful pick in the Chicago airport bookstore. (I was also trying to find something that could hold my attention after 250+ pages of hardcore, fast-paced cyberpunk action.) I finished The Road in two sittings. Did not look up from the book except to refill coffee. Cried at the end, and I was in fight-or-flight mode the entire time I read it. I was hoping someone would try to steal my bag so that I could unleash some adrenaline. Unambiguously recommend.
