I forgot how good this book was! The biggest reason I approve of this dystopia is that there is an actual explanation for what caused it. Most dystopian novels somehow forget to mention why the world is how it is, and although you don't find out until almost the end of the book, you do get an explanation. I'm on the fence about the Pretty operation, though. I'm not sure whether I would be eager to do it or run away like Shay does. One thing about this book is that everything goes by quickly. Sure, this book might be over 400 pages, but everything happens very rapidly. I have mixed feelings for Tally, as well. I know she didn't really have a choice in the matter, and she had only known Shay for three months before it happened, but I don't know if I could turn in my friend and an entire secret civilization for the sake of turning pretty.

This was a cute read, but nothing truly extraordinary in terms of children's literature. It follows the same trajectory as traditional fairy tales in which the children lose their parents and are subjected to the cruel fates of a world that hopes to take advantage of their innocence. The author creates an interesting persona in Lemony Snicket, one that is maintained through an "about the author" page and a note to the editor, and that is certainly a facet that will intrigue young grade school readers. As an English teacher however, I really appreciated the attempts to explain sophisticated vocabulary throughout the text. I enjoyed reading this with my son and appreciate what the author is doing in aiming directly at the targeted audience, but I don't feel this is one of those children's books that really transcends that intended demographic.

Confirming my reverence of nature, Into the Wild is a compelling recount of what happens when someone forgos that reverence, as told by someone who made a similar mistake and lived. Very interested to see what Sean Penn does with this.

A sympathetic and fairly accurate synopsis of anarchism written by a non-anarchist. The only factual error Sheehan makes is in writing that the Unabomber was inspired by John Zerzan. Zerzan and Kaczynski did have lengthy conversations, but during and after the Unabomber's trial. There is no evidence to suggest that the bombings were a result of the Unabomber reading John Zerzan.
