I enjoyed The Declaration, so I was eager to read this as soon as our library bought it.

Mark Helprin, stop ripping my heart out with your short stories. The last 3 in this collection just killed me...

Read to me by my parents when I was real tiny. I can't really bring it in me to pick up the series itself (having been spoiled for pretty much all of it), but this book series stands as one that parents should take the time to read to their kids.

This was a complex, heavy, and meaningful novel, the satisfying kind I can't read many of in a row. I'm impressed by Gaiman's ambition with this novel, and I think he succeeds. It's given me a lot to think about. It's almost like a modern-day Iliad. Recommended! :)

That's just it. It was ok. Nothing compared to Water For Elephants. Not very much about the Bonobos at all really. I didn't feel like I learned anything like I was hoping to. It was more of a man and woman sort of late thirties job crisis. Not even a touching romance at all actually. The characters were shallow and I really didn't like them at all. I did skip ove one scene about bad things done as research and that was never resolved in the book later. so I would not go out of my way to recommend this book. I would rather have read a straight research paper on the author's own experience with the Bonobo language study instead.

Times have gotten hard in America and that's why people need the Therapeutic Forgetting Clinics. One little pill makes all your terrible memories of this or that bombing disappear. You can even make other bad memories vanish if you choose. During Nora's first trip her mother reveals a big secret memory that she wants to forget. Nora decides that it's better to remember, so she spits out her pill when no one is looking. She got this idea from a kid she say before going in with her mother. This boy turns into a friend and co-conspirator to spread the truth and help people remember. This was a fun little novel. It was fast paced and an interesting concept. I really liked the story line and am eager to see what happens next. Nora, Micah and Winter are an unlikely trio. Micah and Winter make sense, but Nora in the equation just doesn't add up. I never got a good sense of what kind of a person she was. She seemed very artificial at times, but then she's all underground rebel. It just didn't feel natural and it put me off a bit. I really enjoyed Micah though. He was a really great character. This was a quick futuristic read. The plot was the focus so the character development and world-building fell a bit by the way side. It was definitely interesting enough that I'm eager to read the next two in this series. First Line: "I'm about to forget everything I'm going to tell you." Favorite Line: "Okay, Dad is definitely a creep, but he's my creep." Read more: http://www.areadingnook.com/#ixzz2bxG...

This firmly falls into "I really liked it, but I can't say I loved it" for me. It was an entertaining story, and it throws in some really well done folklore. And the parts of the book that took place in human elements with human characters were equally as well done-- I fully understand Lena's family and her dynamic and their relationships, and I related to it. I really, really related to Lena trying to love Kai. Lena is drawn as a real-feeling teenage girl. The mermaids are drawn really well. But the story isn't quite there. The pacing is really weird: about two-thirds of the story are spent on Lena discovering this paranormal world, and it felt like a bit of a waste to have so relatively little happen there, and for it to have so relatively little payoff. I think I was expecting more of a character growth and more of a...story, for lack of a better term. Overall, I recommend it as an entertaining, decently crafted mermaid story.

Fictionalized account of true story of the 1st “commoner” to marry the Emperor of Japan, and the miseries to which she was subjected, in essence a prisoner of court traditions and rituals. Sad; very interesting.
