I should start by saying that I don't read romance novels. In fact, I really kind of detest romance novels. Unless they are written by Charlotte Bronte. This is the same kind of rollercoaster as Wuthering Heights, another old school romance that I couldn't stop re-reading. Maybe its the unending tragedy that overshadows the actual romance. Maybe its the aching reserve, completely extinct in our culture dominated by shiny, soul-free Hiltons. I don't know really what it is, and I'm not articulate enough to explore classics already decontructed by far more literary types. I don't like romance. I do like Bronte's brand.

I really wanted to like this book. I love fantasy. I love middle grade books. I really enjoy the Decemberists music. But some how those three things didn't add up for me. It was a perfectly good story: it reminded me a bit of Redwall, only with humans as well as animals. And back in middle school I was a huge Redwall fan. At the same time it reminded me of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrel. I think that is because of the word choises and overall design of the book. Melly is pond of those authors who is unafraid of challenging his readers with his word choises. Many of those words give the story a bit of an antiquated feel. I do think the design of the book affected the reading experience. The book is very square, which creates very long lines of text. Those long lines feel a bit intimidating. On the other hand the illustrations are beautiful. There are some lovely full color illustrations, but they could have been better situated within the text (as in next to the passage they illustrated instead of one page to one chapter later). This is a book I think I would have greatly enjoyed if I was just a little younger.

I enjoyed this book but also had some serious problems with it. On a literary level, the prose was lovely but the pacing sometimes seemed off, and the climax wasn't very...climactic. On a more political level, well. This book is supposedly a retelling of Tam Lin, a ballad I'm not very familiar with -- and maybe if I were, it would make a difference. I really liked the main character -- intelligent, stubborn, outspoken, strong, awkward -- but don't like how her main transformation is to become more graceful and attractive. I also had a huge problem with the role of religion. It is one thing to Other the Fairy Folk, and for parts of the book I think Pope does a good job balancing their role as villains (they do take captives, after all) and their role as an interesting, somewhat appealing people. But then out of nowhere comes this Christian blather -- that doesn't even get followed through, plot-wise -- that severely judges the fairies for their human sacrifice, and glorifies Christianity for its lack thereof, as if Christianity hasn't committed its share of bloodshed -- not to mention other horrible things, such as driving many pagan religions underground. And yes, I would have been angry and annoyed if Christ had turned out to be the savior of this book, just b/c I'm tired of always seeing non-Christianity vilified, but it was equally annoying to have it mentioned and then lead nowhere, as if the author had to get her little pro-Christian bit in. Still, like I said, I enjoyed much of the book. I really liked the Elizabethan feel of the world, as well as many of the characters, even though I wish most were developed more. I think this was probably a four-star read in my mind until the end brought in the annoying religious sentiments and then wrapped up so oddly and suddenly.
