Wow! Finding out who Justin Fisher is, was, and the story of his mother was an intriguing journey that had me gripped in the mystery. His mother suffered such sorrow while trying to maintain a home for her children that was, in the end, a home of emotional pain. I recommend this read to those who want to be part of the process of peeling away layers of a person to find the origin of who he is, to discover the past with him and then wonder what direction the future will take.

I really liked this! I think the circumstances that Kaje created for Mac were imaginative and well-explained, and totally connected Mac's personality and his decisions about staying in the closet and connected with his daughter. There are stories about saintly relatives coming out of the woodwork to help raise kids, but neither Mac nor Tony have that option. Tony has to deal with the alcoholic mother of a good friend's son, and Mac has to depend on an inflexibly fundamentalist cousin to help raise his daughter. Yet both men are determined to make a difference in a child's life, and are willing to sacrifice something to do it. The murder mystery story was well told, and created a great framework for the development of Mac and Tony's relationship. Given the realities of both their situations (Tony's need for a genuine connection with a loyal partner, and Mac's need for time to develop some new strategies to deal with his daughter and his job), made the HFN ending feel right, instead of a shortcut. If there is a sequel, great, but this story stands well on its own.

I cried over the Book Thief, and not because it's a WWII setting. I cried because I got booted out of Liesel's world so abruptly, and it hurt to realize that there were no more pages. For me, this feeling is the signature of a really great book. It takes hold of your heart and your imagination until you're living the story--you are the story. When the pages detach from you, you ache. "I am haunted by humans," says the narrator. Upon completing this book, I too feel haunted by the humans of this tale.

Although set in a small town in Vermont, in 1924, it felt oddly contemporary. Something about the atmosphere Hesse conveyed that resonated with the general public climate now. Can't put my finger on it. The beauty of the small moments was so eloquently captured here. It was heartbreaking and tender.
